It’s fall hair color season in Madison, WI and we are well equipped
This fall we’re seeing blondes craving a change, dimensional brunettes and warm vivids that really shine, while the year of Covid 2020, many clients are being ambitious and trying out vivid hair color combinations for their first time.
As the leaves change, the sky gets more grey, the outside air is cooler and we start thinking about warm things: pumpkin, apple cinnamon, warm vanilla.. clients typically change their hair color to match these vibes. Whether we come up with a subtle tonal change to a brunette for a bit more of a red reflection, or add some highlights into a cool “bronde” with some dramatic pieces of caramel tones. There’s so many fun ways to custom these hues.
This fall we’re seeing lots of cherry/velvety dimensional reds, pastel pinks, glossy cool brunettes, bright honey blondes, brunettes going lighter while leaving a shadow root, or blondes adding depth with a shadow root, and bold face framing (“money-piece) caramel highlights are all the rage at this time and we are having a fun time creating/customizing these looks!
For our vivid fashion colors, our shadow roots can help someone who is trying a new look ease into it, and keep it lower maintenance, sometime this is a more natural looking color, or those looking to go more bold may use a darker shade of their vivid color for the shadow root. Our blondes transitioning to a fall look have been doing anything from adding some golden low lights and/or a warm shadow root, and even adding many different shades of pastel pinks to soft rose gold tones for a beautiful, soft fall hue! Brunettes are adding a head full of balayage highlights and asking for them to be toned to a cool shade of light brown for that “bronde” color with a cool, shiney finish, perfect for the chilly weather that is to come! Then there’s those bold guests always looking for something completely new, recommending a new shade of vibrant cherry/velvet red, even a redish violet will put these trend setters ahead of the game, and will really POP on those beautiful fall, sunny days. This fall these new shades of color have me super excited to be in the salon, giving my clients some exciting color, I just love our abilities with the Pulp Riot color line to achieve these new, custom looks!VIEW HAIR COLOR SERVICES

I got stuck in the world of loving vivid hair
Vivid hairstyles, also known as fashion colors, unicorn hair, crazy rainbow hair, and many, many other terms I’ve heard used. To start my love for this new world, I started by asking my fellow hairstylist Tanya Hawkins about dying my hair bright and funky colors. It all started at our previous salon in downtown Madison, WI…
Tanya specializes in many specialty and vivid colors(being a skilled colorist this makes sense), which are all the rage right now, and I got hooked, always working with her on what color was next for one of our after hours, late night hair sessions. From hot pink, to mermaid blues & violets, very briefly back to a ‘natural’ shade of blonde, rose gold, back to hot pink, and currently working towards a shade of a “berry good” blend of purple, and rosy peach, I’m hooked on having wild colored hair. However, because many of my clients and even I fell into it (not on purpose, but it is so addicting), there was some things I didn’t exactly know ahead of time that would have saved both me and my clients. So I asked Tanya, along with some other hair stylists we’ve had the pleasure working with, what clients typically don’t know when they come in wanting fashion colored hair. So if you’ve been thinking about diving into a full rainbow of color choices, get your notebook out we have some important topics to cover.
Why is rainbow hair color different?
To start, let’s go over what makes rainbow hair color unlike more natural shades you’d get your hair colored at any salon or maybe even in a box. According to Tanya’s words, to get vivid, bright, loud, or any combo of the rainbow hair color, you need to go through a different type of process from traditional hair color. Let this serve as a warning: additional steps and care are required!
For vivid hair colors to achieve bests results, it is best on to start on lighter hair, bleached blonde, pre-lit, lightened, pre-lightened or however you’d like to describe “very light hair color.” This is where many people who attempt to become a beautiful rainbow at home, make mistakes and/or ruin their hair. Luckily, there are some products that can make the lightening process safer, like Blank Canvas by Pulp Riot, which are truly only available through a licensed professional. At #MMCstyle Salon in Madison, we take the learning process seriously and our process will be done safely with a professional who has had the right training and continues to attend classes to extend the abilities. You may be saying “WHAT?! this is the greatest insurance policy ever” and you’d be right to do so, we take the worry and hassle off your hands.
However, more the just starting with a light hair color base, vivid colors are semi-permanent, which means they sit just at the surface of the hair. In addition to starting correctly, using proper hair care products applied correctly in the first place is so incredibly important! If you don’t start correctly, you will be washing your hair color down the drain along with more money to fix it, which leads us to our next topic…
It costs more
Oops, I spend much more on my hair since I started doing vivid colors than I spent on it before, but it’s for a tremendously good reason in my biased opinion. The time it takes to apply vivid colors is longer and takes expertise. “Lightening properly takes time and care,” Tanya agrees. “Not overlapping where bleach has already been applied in the past is also important to the health of your hair to help prevent damage and breakage.”
Typically, a few shades are used to add depth and dimension so that the end result doesn’t look flat or amateurish,” Tanya explained (another good reason to see a professional). “Placement takes thought and precision.” All in all, the vivid hair colors usually take a little longer overall and especially if you’re going for a layered look, more than one color, balayage, ombré, etc.
While vivid colors will cost more than your typical hair color, they don’t have to be outrageous and it all depends on your hair when you walk in for your appointment or can be discussed during your consultation prior to your appointment. When your hair is already light, their is the possibility of skipping the lightening process. If your hair is already dyed, on the other hand, Tanya said “you are looking at multiple visits to lighten your hair and then achieve the rainbow you desire. In some cases if the guest’s hair is box dyed at home we take even more time to lighten the hair since box color is harder to remove and the results from a lightening session cannot be guaranteed.” Seriously, in this situation, before your hair gets any further damage, leave it to the pros, judgement free and here to help…plus at #MMCstyle Salon, we don’t mind a challenge.BOOK CONSULTATION
Get used to cold showers
The best way to save on your vivid color hairstyles staying bright and lasting much longer is to use cold water in the shower. We admit, it’s not the most fun, but it if you can use the cold water on your hair and then switch over…well lets just say this one takes a little practice but can pay off decent dividends, allowing you to stretch your appointments out a little further.
Warm water opens the hair’s cuticle, or top layer, and since vivid colors sits on top of the hair the more you blast that cuticle open with hot water the more color is also removed. Both Tanya and I stand firmly behind a great conditioning regimen to all our clients to help their colors last. Use conditioner and cool water as much as you like and try to use a shampoo much less, only a few (2) times tops during the week, you can still scrub your scalp with the conditioner to loosen grime and grease but it strips the color less and the cold water helps to keep the cuticle closed.
Tanya added that when you do shampoo, make sure to use one that is sulfate free and added that it’s important to “nourish the hair before and after the service. Rebuild the hair before you destroy it and once it has been damaged by a service, make sure you try to bring it back to good health with a good shampoo and conditioning regime.”
Some colors fade quickly
When I had my blue tips, it seemed like they faded way faster than my pink fades now. While I thought it might have been attributed to dry ends losing color faster, now that I have some new Deviant Purple from Pulp Riot in my hair now, I’ve was curious, will the new purple fade faster than some of the placed in. I asked Tanya, if she thought I’m crazy for asking.
Tanya reminded me “It all depends on the base of the color,” she said. “Colors like deeper pink or magenta usually have a red base which means they stain the hair more and hold longer. I would say deeper colors always last longer.” She told me that for Pulp Riot (the brand of vivid color she uses on my hair) they say that their darker jewel tones last up to 40 shampoos, whereas pastels last up to 20. “This all depends on the health of the hair,” Tanya cautioned. “And includes every time you rinse and do a conditioning cleanse.”
Tanya also noted that the way you’ve treated your hair in the past can impact fading. “If you are someone who has bleached your hair a lot, your color will also bleed out fast, so it will go from vivid to dull very quickly,” she said. It all boiled down to another 2020 reminder of even I, Mallory Cook, need to pay attention to my hair regimen.
Colors may last longer in winter
When winter rolls around, especially if you live somewhere like Madison, Wisconsin, you may notice that your vivid colors are lasting longer. No, I don’t mean because you can go longer without washing your hair since you’ll be wearing badger stocking hats and cheeseheads everywhere, including deep into to the playoffs hopefully (but there is that).
One of the things I always anticipated, but didn’t pay enough attention to, was how much impact the sun would have on my hair! Of course, I know that my hair lightens in the summer to give way to natural highlights, if and when I get out in the summer, but from summers past, I can attest I’ve come home with some extra blonde streaks in place of some of my pink and then I certainly realized just how powerful the sun is. That’s one reason (maybe the only reason) I’m looking forward to winter with shorter days and a weaker sun. This is, luckily, another one that’s not totally in my head.
As hairstylists, we definitely notice when the sun fades color faster, but using a leave in conditioner before exposure helps maintain the color better. Please be aware or pre-book more frequent color touch ups if you plan on being out in the sun a lot!
It’s time to give up white sheets and towels
This one’s pretty straightforward, but it’s worth mentioning because you really only think about it once it’s happened to you. Just like your hair will fade in the sun and water, it will rub off over time. With this in mind, you probably don’t want to spend your evenings on white sheets or dry off with white towels when your hair is pink or blue.
Tanya told me, “I always warn my clients but sometimes they tell me they have permanently pink pillow cases.” And this, my friends, is why when on vacation, I may be the one bringing my own pillowcase from home, usually placed nicely around my own pillow too of course.
It’s possible to keep your hair healthy
Lightening can certainly be hard on your hair over time, there are ways to maintain the health of your hair and your wallet, too. “If you treat your hair nicely at home, use the right products, etc. most of our mermaid clients come in for a lightening session at 8-12 weeks (which is typical of natural colors),” Tanya backs me up on. Also, in between appointments, many of our clients will schedule a vivid hair color refresh, where we can apply the fun colors over their hair as is and do not lighten. I can personally attest to this method as it’s what I’ve been doing as well (someone remind me after this that I’m due for a refresh).
Another option, if you don’t need your hair totally lightened and just want to remove some of your current color, is to use a color remover to remove old vivid’s. Tanya and I did this once on my hair when I wasn’t quite due for lightening, but when my color had faded more than usual and we wanted to “prep the canvas” a bit before adding the next round of vivid color. After using the color remover and adding another round of vivid colors, my hair color was more vibrant than if we had just layered fresh vivid’s on top, but I avoided the damage of bleaching again too soon. Not to crush over the point, but this is why seeing a professional is so useful, even to someone that may think they can do it just as well themselves.
Not all brands of color are created equal
“But wait,” I can hear you saying, “Why can’t I just go to my nearest beauty supply store and buy the same fun colors?” Aside from the issue of lightening the hair first, the kinds of colors available to the average consumer aren’t the same as what you’ll get in a salon. Higher quality salon brands use the best ingredients with the safest standards. They don’t stain the hair as much and are more naturally derived. They also are removed more easily and last longer. Cheaper brands often use metallic dyes which are more harsh on the hair and can be difficult to remove. Add many different allergic reactions possible to the mix and you’ll derive quickly to the answer that professional grade products are just plain better for you, along with being vegan, gluten-free and animal cruelty-free.
Why does removal matter? With vivid hair color it’s what you see is what you get. I always here Tanya explain, If someone’s hair is green and they want to change to red the stylist needs to think back to the color wheel and work with the pigment they see. Do you feel confident enough with your color wheel skills to alter the pigment in your hair appropriately when you want a change? I do, because I’m quite confident in my skills, but the many conversations between us both along with years of experience fixing issues always leads us down the road of at home coloring doesn’t make one feel very confident, so why worry?
Not all stylists are created equal
You want any specialist you see to be on the cutting edge of their craft, and vivid colors require just that. That’s why it’s important to choose a stylist who is continuing to learn. “It’s super important because in any fashion and beauty industry there are constantly new trends and styles,” Tanya said. Tanya and the rest of our hairstylists at #MMCstyle Salon attend formal education through our distributors and here at the salon along the color brands we use and their direct education in person and online. I also attend classes and seminars on my own, along with going to industry hair show on both coasts along with Chicago. The internet, and social media sites like Instagram in particular are changing the game, but also making it a little scary for just anyone to attempt a “how to” video, which we all agree shouldn’t be done for hair color, leave the “how to’s” to at home styling ideas.
However, before you could get education from attending a class from a product company where usually they just push their brand and their methods. Or by continually going to a huge show where there was little to no interaction with the other artists and more sales reps. Now most of the classes we schedule and attend we host or have fewer attendees, which makes for an intimate environment where we can all share from personal experience and learn new techniques.
Choose to go to an artist that is experienced and certified with the color line that they use in the salon so you know you are having someone work on you that knows the product line very well to avoid unnecessary damage and processes and will have your hair’s health in mind.
It’s addictive at every age
There’s just something about the way vivid colors make me feel the most like myself. It’s why I keep going back for more (and trying new colors). And I’m not the only person who has become addicted to fun, bright colored hair. Tanya said, “It’s super addictive. Once you get a taste and you realize how fun and low commitment it can be, you just keep wanting more. I have had many clients who start off wanting just some peek-a-boos underneath their hair, or even a single piece. And many of these guests are now full heads of vivids and have been for years.”
And if you think that vivid haircolor is just for young women (or those going through a midlife crisis), think again! I have had clients as young as 10 and my oldest over 80. Some switch it up every time, others have a signature shade, and most frequently me and my client will come up with a plan for transitioning their color every few months in order for them to get the best possible results when making a change and the most “oohs and ahhs.”
This trend isn’t going anywhere and it is becoming more acceptable to have these vivid hair tones in your hair! It can be so beautiful on people, the way the different color tones look against their eyes and skin. Trying on all different shades can be empowering and beautiful! If you’re in doubt, theirs no pressure, schedule a consultation, come in relax and we’ll come up with a plan unique to you and only you!
Join the unicorn club
If you’re looking for a change, either because you’re nearing one of those scary milestone birthdays or you’re just ready to try something new, vivid hair is a really fantastic option. It’s a collaborative process between you and whatever stylist you choose, so make sure you choose a good one (I count myself very lucky to have found Tanya as fortuitously as I did and super excited to have her working at the salon).
Each session really is like creating a work of art together. We talk about the long-term direction of my hair, where I’m hoping we can go in that day’s session, and then she takes my ideas and turns them into a vision, then turns that vision into reality, all while I coast through my phone or flip through magazines and Instagram pictures. It’s such an easy way to put a new spin on your look, make a dramatic bold statement, and express your personality. Plus, it’s a lot less permanent than getting a tattoo. So go ahead, join the vivid unicorn, mermaid, rainbow, etc hair club. It’s a lot of fun over here. Book Online Today.

Shake vigorously before each use. Spray wherever you want a bit of volume and movement. Tousle hair and repeat until the desired look is achieved.
When you want that pretty but gritty texture. Next day hair without the dirt or the wait.
A blend of Aloe and Zeolite give this texture spray the power of a dry shampoo, with the hold of a lightweight hairspray. Together, they work to absorb unwanted oils and balance the scalp while lifting and plumping the hair. Aloe also hydrates and smooths unruly strands into an intentionally messy look.
For voluminous hair, focus on the roots for a height boost and finish the mid-lengths and ends with an all over spray. For a natural, dirty texture: spray on wet hair, scrunch, tousle, and go.PURCHASE

A life of a career hairstylist can be a rewarding, and beautiful one! The one thing that makes this possible, and is not a painful feat, is retaining clients through the years. This allows a stylist to be consistently busy, while building meaningful relationships, and receive plenty of referrals from their clients who know them. Top notch customer service, listening, booking ahead or having an easy solution for guests to book, self image, and staying up to date on skills and trends are all things that keep a client wanting to come back.
Customer service should be any salon’s first priority
It’s obvious as a hairstylist customer service skills should not be lacking, we are in the industry of guest handling, and it is something we should all take seriously! From the second that customer walks through the door they are a guest in your salon, and should be treated like VIP every time. Make sure they are comfortable along the way, having a beverage, a comfortable seat, something to read, and having a swift easy checkout are all things that add to a great service. Make them feel beautiful and important (they are paying for our TIME, we need to give that whole-heartily to them). Not rushing a service, and being present for your guest the whole time they are in your chair are crucial. Your cell phone should not be in sight where it will distract you, and the conversation should be kept between you and your guest, unless of course your guest strikes up a conversation with someone nearby. Overall, guests feeling fully attended to from the second they walk in the door makes them feel very special, and like they are cared for, this will keep them coming back for more!
Clients aren’t coming to listen to a hairstylist talk the entire time
The skill of listening can be a tough one, practice listening until your guest is completely done with a thought before beginning to think of a response, especially during your consultation before starting a service. Trying to answer before someone is finished with a thought can make a conversation not only take longer than necessary, but can also lead to missing some very important information your guest may be saying. Make sure to ask questions when you are reading someones body language that is not representing what they are saying. This really shows your guest you are paying attention and can make them very comfortable with you. Once a guest is comfortable talking with you, knowing you are hearing what they like and want, so you can execute exactly what they’d like. Do this and they’re going to be coming back to you for certain!
Scheduling their next appointment is completely appropriate
Make sure you are always setting as many clients up for their next service as possible. I believe a lot of stylists feel like they are being ‘pushy’ recommending a date, and setting it up for their guests next visit. I disagree, and I would go as far to say 95% of your guests disagree as well. This is a closing out part of the service our guests are looking for us guidance on. This is the moment we share with them when that new pixie may need a trim, or that fresh red color will possibly fade and be ready for a touch up; therefore, it’s an integral part of your service! In fact, I believe we are doing a disservice for not at the very least suggesting a time frame, before asking them to pre-book. And for those guests who prefer to wait to book, having an online system, or an easy way to contact us personally helps assure more than half of those people get scheduled properly with ease and at their own convenience, which leads them back into our chair! Don’t miss the mark by not supporting your clients, they come to your salon for you, not to have round about conversations about booking with your front desk staff, or end up booked for the wrong service, or even worse, with another stylist who was easier to book with.
Hairstylists are part of the decor and overall impression also
A nice reminder for our clients to why they come to us is having a great self image, this is especially important with first time clients, after all shouldn’t we focus on making the best first impression. We’re hairstylists, that equals having our hair done always, makeup on, and dressing to the 9’s to not only give us confidence, but it screams “you can trust me, I know what I’m doing, I care enough about myself so that I can take care of you!” Schedule days in the salon with staff to do service trades to keep color & cuts trendy and fresh, we are our own walking billboards, we should be taking care of each other! Being aware of how you’re carrying yourself in front of guests, and conversations being held is something I always work hard to remember. People are always watching when we’re out on the floor, it’s great to not be hiding in the break room so clients can see us, but we should be doing everything in our power to improve the image of ourselves and the salon while on the salon floor.
Evolve or die
Staying up to date on trends and skills in our industry for hair color, cuts, and styles will help keep ourselves and our clients on trend, and be another thing that makes our clients trust us in-order to keep coming back. Freshening up on skills will help us to be certain we are always using best practices in everything that we do, participating or hosting in salon classes is a fantastic way to stay fresh. Your salon team should learn from each other, grow together and help keep your fellow stylists accountable for their skills. Practice makes perfect, supporting stylists, and being supported by stylists will help us always give the best service to our client, and get them the exact hair style they are looking for. At the end of the day, I believe is one of the most important ways to keep our clients coming back, along with everything else you keep in your experience bag.
It’s about providing value without any “quid pro quo”
You may think this is about skill, it’s not, skill may be involved, but it’s truly about providing value to your clients new and old without asking for anything in return. Try placing your mindset into revolving around customer experience and services that we provide, it’s given me the opportunity over the last 12+ years to grow and maintain a steady business. I’ve been able to move from 4 salons during this time, each time moving up in position and responsibility, ultimately affording me the opportunity to go into business for myself. These values along with improving my skill gives me the confidence and excitement in-order to help grow and cultivate a high value culture for other stylists an build my own salon in 2020. Now, I will be able to grow a team, in an atmosphere where guests are happy, well cared for – in turn our team can enjoy themselves, be busy with new clients, and continually strive to bring value to our salon’s clients in every aspect of our services.
Faction8 Permanent Hair Color by Pulp Riot at #MMCSTYLE
Up until about a year ago I was always a Redken hair color girl, it’s what I trained on and knew very well, which always gave me confidence. In November of 2018, I switched the salon I was working with. I left for a new opportunity to help setup and start a brand new hair salon and spa on Madison’s west side. Setting up a salon meant I had the opportunity to look into an entirely new hair care and hair color product set, different from what I was using. However, I also had the choice to stick to what I was comfortable with. This question I thought, was going to be a no brainer…(duh, Redken was my thing). Then, my Salon Centric Sales Representative suggested I try the new Pulp Riot permanent hair color line, Faction8 and told me about all the benefits. My Rep could tell my interest was peaked immediately.
I had been using Pulp Riots semi-permanent color lines and loving them, so it made sense to give their permanent hair color line, Faction 8 a shot. So, I did some research. From everything I learned about Pulp Riot, I was sold from the start. The owners story, how they came to be, the education they offer, the fact that the line is created by artists. Everything important to me was well thought out in this line. The research on Faction8 had me wanting to know more and lead me to make the switch.
Some benefits of Faction8 hair color
Faction8 is a permanent hair color line created by Pulp Riot with 80 total shades, inter-mixable for complete color customization control, and the ability to turn from permanent to demi-permanent with the right mixing ratio with the developers. The Faction8 line is super easy to keep track of what I have on hand and I love the many ways to mix and create any color my clients or I dream up.
With Faction8 hair color, there’s boosters to really add some punch to your reds and coppers or help to ash out even more of some of your colors you choose. Another nice feature of Faction8 permanent hair color, you can use these boosters alone as a straight pigment for strategies such as making a high lift red or red/violet or straight up putting some purple or blue over pre-lightened hair for a dramatic fashion color. Using color theory you may also get more tone added to a formula when trying to keep excess warm or cool unwanted tones out of your hair canvas.
The Faction8 permanent hair color line has five high-lift blonde colors that work on medium-dark brown hair to lighter hair (I’ve also had success with these on very dark hair) to lighten and tone natural hair color all at the same time, which is flipping amazing! Faction8 high lift colors can also be used to tone blondes beautifully when mixed with a lower developer in the ratio of 1:2 or even more developer to further dilute the formula. Consider the background tone while using the Pulp Riot Toners, these can make beautiful pastel colors of every hue and add a dab of a booster to even make it more that color.
Every color in the the Faction8 permanent hair color line does consist of quinoa to strengthen and moisturize the hair while we are coloring. Another nice treat is it doesn’t stink, AT ALL. You may think it far-fetched, but I dare you to try to say it stinks, because you may be lying if you say it does! Even more pleasing to me is Pulp Riot’s semi-permanents, actually smell good.
Pulp Riot High Speed Toners are made to work in a matter of minutes on damp hair that you are blonding, guaranteeing quick results using a product in the way it was meant to work! You can mix these toners in with your lighter formulas to add a custom hue to your color, example: adding rose gold for a bit more of a pinky tone to a lighter copper is a super fun option! (keep in mind mixing rations with developers since you are adding a “high speed” color to your formula, you may want to dilute with a little extra developer if this will sit for a while).
The reviews are in, Pulp Riot’s Faction8 hair color is absolutely amazing!

Men’s color, haircut and style by Mallory Cook of MMC Style in Madison, WI
A lot of men hear about their female friends or significant others going to spend a good chunk of time at the salon for color services, but it doesn’t even cross their mind that men’s hair color could be a type of service for them. They think women get to have all the fun and enjoy a couple hours of escape from life, while they themselves go in for the “usual” “number 2 on the side and longer on top” type deal. Well I have news for you guys, color services are for YOU as well, and you do have more than one option when it comes to color!
My male clientele, just like my female clientele, gets a scalp and neck massage at the shampoo bowl, any the same care that the appointment is about them, I’m not here just to rush through appointments and get people in and out monotonously. Not for guys, and not for women. Same for color appointments then, I will make sure to consult before we get started on what you’d like to achieve, and also give you any ideas of my own I may have for you if you’re looking for some advice. Here’s a couple of color methods I really enjoy for my male clients, and I think they really like too.
You’ll also get more than the quick 20-30 minute appointment with your stylist, call it your “forced relaxation” appointment if you so need. Guys need pampering and an escape from life too! And sitting an extra 45 minutes to an hour in your stylists chair can be a great way to get some stress relief from the everyday grind.
A dusting of lightness
Added in lightener (bleach) pieces by way of highlighting the hair in foils, or painting the product right on the hair is a really fun, simple way to update your look, looking like you just hit the beach. Or go bold and add in some platinum or silver light pieces for a very modern, cool vibe.
My male clientele, just like my female clientele, gets a scalp and neck massage at the shampoo bowl, any the same care that the appointment is about them, I’m not here just to rush through appointments and get people in and out monotonously. So the same is true for men as is for my female clientele, I will take the time to find what look you’ll feel good with and create a placement of the lightener that works with your style. This is also not like how you guys may remember from middle school or high school days of the guys rocking the yellow looking frosted tips. I know I as a stylist in 2019 have so much education at my finger tips and the availability of amazing products, I am sure to use a lightener that lightens your hair past that deep yellow phase, and then use a hair color as what’s called a toner to counteract any yellow tones left in the hair, and leave you with a nice, naturally sun kissed looking color, and at that point we could add in some cool silver, or even a daring slight shade of blue or anything else you may be feeling.
One of my favorite ways to blend grays for any client of mine is using a sheer coverage color. So a hair color that will cover some of your grays partially, and some more resistant pieces will remain gray (I also will leave out some grays if I want to make sure they’re not colored at all). Pulp Riot’s permanent color line Faction8 has the ability to be turned into a more sheer color, showing through what’s naturally beneath on your hair, but getting rid of just how much natural gray/silvers you have. A lot of my clients like this that are not ready to completely go gray yet, it’s an easy way to grow their hair out because there is not a harsh line of outgrowth when their hair starts growing after a color.
This is pretty self explanatory, to my guys who don’t like your grey, whether you just don’t like how it looks against your skin, don’t want to feel it is aging you, or just plain old don’t like it, it is totally acceptable to cover it up. You can cover it with a color close to your natural, or even choose a new color a bit darker or slightly lighter than your natural for a new look. The nice thing about staying close to your natural is you don’t see the color growing out as severely, so you feel like you can make it through to your next haircut appointment before needing a touch-up.
While all of the previous methods are all creative coloring, especially if you’re in my chair. I love to come up with custom colors for all of my clients, I like it to have a tone or a hue you will not find on any of my other clients walking around!
But most people when speaking of creative coloring are talking wild colors, rainbow hair, or something very unique and eye-catching. For example a rooted section we bleach out and paint a rainbow on, some highlights we color violet, or a full head of rocker red hair. Is this loud creative coloring something you’ve ever considered, just been hesitant to pull the trigger? I’d love to hear from you and discuss how we can make this a reality for your hair, and fit it in your lifestyle!
Here’s an example of something you could come your hair one way to mostly hide, and then when you’re out and about could pop up and show off. Now you could keep this to one color if you choose, or even just a couple of your just! It’s all custom, learn to find pictures for inspiration, thinking about what you like and don’t like about any hair cuts and colors is what all tell all of my women, you, my guys, maybe haven’t heard this before. It sure will help give you some inspiration to maybe let yourself have some fun, and get to spend a little more you time in the salon!
