Pureology is a favorite salon product line, because it deserves to be
Pureology is indeed a favorite hair care product line of mine and has been for over a decade now. Every single one of their products pack a punch with “multi-benefits” and their highly concentrated formulas. All Pureology products also use bottles that are 95% post-consumer recycled materials, AND they are 100% recyclable! Pureology NEVER tests on animals, EVERY product is color-safe and protecting, even the purifying shampoo which is rare in any cleansing shampoo. Another great feature is Pureology’s Anti-Fade Complex, which contains antioxidants and full spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen to protect hair and help maintain color between your visits.
A couple more key points to love Pureology:
- Pureology products are SULFATE-FREE! Their concentrated ZeroSulfate® shampoos use a mixture of corn, coconut and sugar for a gentle cleanse, without comprising your hair color.
- Pureology’s dual benefits formulas completely protect your hair and add a variety of custom care benefits dependent on the particular line you choose, for example, their smoothing, strengthening, moisturizing and volumizing.
- Each Pureology line has specific custom benefits with a unique aromatherapy fragrance to really elevate your experience in the salon, and you’ll love it at home when you’re showering either at the end or beginning of your day to help calm the senses!
Pureology cares about everything surrounding each product, their ingredients, the materials they use in packaging and possible environmental impact pre/post product use. Pureology plans out each of their product lines with their carbon footprint in mind to help sustain our environment for our planet.
- Pureology has managed to reduce the amount of water used in their manufacturing processes.
- Pureology’s bottles are made of 50% post-consumer recycled materials which are 100% recyclable.
- Pureology uses 50% post-consumer recycled materials for their printed / brand materials.
- Pureology uses a minimal amount of secondary packaging materials while using cartons made of 100% recycled fibers.
- Pureology now reduces the amount of energy they use to make each bottle.
- Pureology reduces waste during the filling / packaging process of their bottles.

In summary, Pureology’s products are simply amazing, with super-concentrated quality, and is crazy GREEN with their production and materials they use in their company. Pureology continues to hold onto their values, delivering a very high value for their clients and themselves. It is more of enough reason for me to love Pureology Hair Style Products!

A life of a career hairstylist can be a rewarding, and beautiful one! The one thing that makes this possible, and is not a painful feat, is retaining clients through the years. This allows a stylist to be consistently busy, while building meaningful relationships, and receive plenty of referrals from their clients who know them. Top notch customer service, listening, booking ahead or having an easy solution for guests to book, self image, and staying up to date on skills and trends are all things that keep a client wanting to come back.
Customer service should be any salon’s first priority
It’s obvious as a hairstylist customer service skills should not be lacking, we are in the industry of guest handling, and it is something we should all take seriously! From the second that customer walks through the door they are a guest in your salon, and should be treated like VIP every time. Make sure they are comfortable along the way, having a beverage, a comfortable seat, something to read, and having a swift easy checkout are all things that add to a great service. Make them feel beautiful and important (they are paying for our TIME, we need to give that whole-heartily to them). Not rushing a service, and being present for your guest the whole time they are in your chair are crucial. Your cell phone should not be in sight where it will distract you, and the conversation should be kept between you and your guest, unless of course your guest strikes up a conversation with someone nearby. Overall, guests feeling fully attended to from the second they walk in the door makes them feel very special, and like they are cared for, this will keep them coming back for more!
Clients aren’t coming to listen to a hairstylist talk the entire time
The skill of listening can be a tough one, practice listening until your guest is completely done with a thought before beginning to think of a response, especially during your consultation before starting a service. Trying to answer before someone is finished with a thought can make a conversation not only take longer than necessary, but can also lead to missing some very important information your guest may be saying. Make sure to ask questions when you are reading someones body language that is not representing what they are saying. This really shows your guest you are paying attention and can make them very comfortable with you. Once a guest is comfortable talking with you, knowing you are hearing what they like and want, so you can execute exactly what they’d like. Do this and they’re going to be coming back to you for certain!
Scheduling their next appointment is completely appropriate
Make sure you are always setting as many clients up for their next service as possible. I believe a lot of stylists feel like they are being ‘pushy’ recommending a date, and setting it up for their guests next visit. I disagree, and I would go as far to say 95% of your guests disagree as well. This is a closing out part of the service our guests are looking for us guidance on. This is the moment we share with them when that new pixie may need a trim, or that fresh red color will possibly fade and be ready for a touch up; therefore, it’s an integral part of your service! In fact, I believe we are doing a disservice for not at the very least suggesting a time frame, before asking them to pre-book. And for those guests who prefer to wait to book, having an online system, or an easy way to contact us personally helps assure more than half of those people get scheduled properly with ease and at their own convenience, which leads them back into our chair! Don’t miss the mark by not supporting your clients, they come to your salon for you, not to have round about conversations about booking with your front desk staff, or end up booked for the wrong service, or even worse, with another stylist who was easier to book with.
Hairstylists are part of the decor and overall impression also
A nice reminder for our clients to why they come to us is having a great self image, this is especially important with first time clients, after all shouldn’t we focus on making the best first impression. We’re hairstylists, that equals having our hair done always, makeup on, and dressing to the 9’s to not only give us confidence, but it screams “you can trust me, I know what I’m doing, I care enough about myself so that I can take care of you!” Schedule days in the salon with staff to do service trades to keep color & cuts trendy and fresh, we are our own walking billboards, we should be taking care of each other! Being aware of how you’re carrying yourself in front of guests, and conversations being held is something I always work hard to remember. People are always watching when we’re out on the floor, it’s great to not be hiding in the break room so clients can see us, but we should be doing everything in our power to improve the image of ourselves and the salon while on the salon floor.
Evolve or die
Staying up to date on trends and skills in our industry for hair color, cuts, and styles will help keep ourselves and our clients on trend, and be another thing that makes our clients trust us in-order to keep coming back. Freshening up on skills will help us to be certain we are always using best practices in everything that we do, participating or hosting in salon classes is a fantastic way to stay fresh. Your salon team should learn from each other, grow together and help keep your fellow stylists accountable for their skills. Practice makes perfect, supporting stylists, and being supported by stylists will help us always give the best service to our client, and get them the exact hair style they are looking for. At the end of the day, I believe is one of the most important ways to keep our clients coming back, along with everything else you keep in your experience bag.
It’s about providing value without any “quid pro quo”
You may think this is about skill, it’s not, skill may be involved, but it’s truly about providing value to your clients new and old without asking for anything in return. Try placing your mindset into revolving around customer experience and services that we provide, it’s given me the opportunity over the last 12+ years to grow and maintain a steady business. I’ve been able to move from 4 salons during this time, each time moving up in position and responsibility, ultimately affording me the opportunity to go into business for myself. These values along with improving my skill gives me the confidence and excitement in-order to help grow and cultivate a high value culture for other stylists an build my own salon in 2020. Now, I will be able to grow a team, in an atmosphere where guests are happy, well cared for – in turn our team can enjoy themselves, be busy with new clients, and continually strive to bring value to our salon’s clients in every aspect of our services.
Faction8 Permanent Hair Color by Pulp Riot at #MMCSTYLE
Up until about a year ago I was always a Redken hair color girl, it’s what I trained on and knew very well, which always gave me confidence. In November of 2018, I switched the salon I was working with. I left for a new opportunity to help setup and start a brand new hair salon and spa on Madison’s west side. Setting up a salon meant I had the opportunity to look into an entirely new hair care and hair color product set, different from what I was using. However, I also had the choice to stick to what I was comfortable with. This question I thought, was going to be a no brainer…(duh, Redken was my thing). Then, my Salon Centric Sales Representative suggested I try the new Pulp Riot permanent hair color line, Faction8 and told me about all the benefits. My Rep could tell my interest was peaked immediately.
I had been using Pulp Riots semi-permanent color lines and loving them, so it made sense to give their permanent hair color line, Faction 8 a shot. So, I did some research. From everything I learned about Pulp Riot, I was sold from the start. The owners story, how they came to be, the education they offer, the fact that the line is created by artists. Everything important to me was well thought out in this line. The research on Faction8 had me wanting to know more and lead me to make the switch.
Some benefits of Faction8 hair color
Faction8 is a permanent hair color line created by Pulp Riot with 80 total shades, inter-mixable for complete color customization control, and the ability to turn from permanent to demi-permanent with the right mixing ratio with the developers. The Faction8 line is super easy to keep track of what I have on hand and I love the many ways to mix and create any color my clients or I dream up.
With Faction8 hair color, there’s boosters to really add some punch to your reds and coppers or help to ash out even more of some of your colors you choose. Another nice feature of Faction8 permanent hair color, you can use these boosters alone as a straight pigment for strategies such as making a high lift red or red/violet or straight up putting some purple or blue over pre-lightened hair for a dramatic fashion color. Using color theory you may also get more tone added to a formula when trying to keep excess warm or cool unwanted tones out of your hair canvas.
The Faction8 permanent hair color line has five high-lift blonde colors that work on medium-dark brown hair to lighter hair (I’ve also had success with these on very dark hair) to lighten and tone natural hair color all at the same time, which is flipping amazing! Faction8 high lift colors can also be used to tone blondes beautifully when mixed with a lower developer in the ratio of 1:2 or even more developer to further dilute the formula. Consider the background tone while using the Pulp Riot Toners, these can make beautiful pastel colors of every hue and add a dab of a booster to even make it more that color.
Every color in the the Faction8 permanent hair color line does consist of quinoa to strengthen and moisturize the hair while we are coloring. Another nice treat is it doesn’t stink, AT ALL. You may think it far-fetched, but I dare you to try to say it stinks, because you may be lying if you say it does! Even more pleasing to me is Pulp Riot’s semi-permanents, actually smell good.
Pulp Riot High Speed Toners are made to work in a matter of minutes on damp hair that you are blonding, guaranteeing quick results using a product in the way it was meant to work! You can mix these toners in with your lighter formulas to add a custom hue to your color, example: adding rose gold for a bit more of a pinky tone to a lighter copper is a super fun option! (keep in mind mixing rations with developers since you are adding a “high speed” color to your formula, you may want to dilute with a little extra developer if this will sit for a while).
The reviews are in, Pulp Riot’s Faction8 hair color is absolutely amazing!

Lower Classic Hairstyles – Mallory Cook at #MMCSTYLE
For the year of 2019, carrying into the fall/winter time I’ve noticed a ton of different kinds of formal styles, even translated into everyday hair styles being a lower hairstyle. Whether that be a low ponytail, bun, or easy twisted style, a low style seems to automatically imply a more soft, romantic, timeless kind of vibe to your look.
A low pony tail can be a quick, sleek style for the office, or a curled, softly pulled back look for a more formal occasion. A low pony tail is an amazing way to get out of an extra day of hair washing as well, yet still look put together. Use some dry shampoo, like Pulp Riots Berlin Dry Shampoo around your hairline to absorb any extra oils & give you a fresh, clean scent, and sometimes it is necessary to use a hair powder such as Redken Powder Grip 03 in the crown to keep your hair from sticking to your head and looking too flat.
A low bun can be a simple, cleanly done look for a day at the office for a professional look, or this can be appropriate for a formal occasion you are attending. A more intricate low bun with twists and sections pinned over each other can add a more formal look for a bride, or other black tie style occasion. Low buns are nice because they feel and are secure, no one will worry about any pieces popping out of place during an event. The low bun is the base for a lot of styles, because it is such a classic look. Feel free to add a braid to this style, whether their be a braid as more of a part around the hairline, or braid a piece to twist around the bun. There are endless options to this style. A great strong hair spray, I like Pulp Riot Toronto because of it’s ability to hold, but not look sticky, will help to keep your bun looking polished once styled!
Low twisted style:
These can be the most fun styles, and are so customizable. Add in a loose braid, pin organically, have fun with it! These types of hair styles are amazing to accessorize with hair jewelry or flowers randomly pinned in. They can be so elegant and timeless, or simple and casual. Leave out face framing pieces for an even softer, romantic, undone feel. You can achieve a more simple twisted style by pulling hair back loosely, letting some pieces fall our around your face, and randomly take pieces from the pony tail and pin up, or be as intricate as you want by taking smaller sections and twisting them, pull apart the twists and pin as you like how it is looking. I like to use a working hair spray while executing these styles, Pulp Riots new Zurich hair spray has become a favorite of mine for this.
Hairstyles To Wear For Any Occasion
These low styles are my favorite to wear, and to execute as a hair stylist. The wearer of them I always get the vibe of feels comfortable because they still do feel like themselves, sometimes people if they’re wearing something too different can make them feel off and uncomfortable. The purpose of any hair style is to improve on how one feels they look, so these help me to achieve the ultimate goal!
Fall Hairstyles with Mallory Cook at #MMCSTYLE
Looking to try something new with your hair do to change with the season, but not looking to do any drastic haircut or hair color change? You’re in luck! This falls hottest hairstyle trends are easy to accomplish with a simple addition of a hair accessory, slightly different method of drying, or simple placement of some pony-tail holders.
Hair pins on barrettes, on hair pins:
Stacking two identical barrettes next to each other is a way to elevate your pony, down style, whatever it is you’ve decided to rock that day in a matter of two snaps of a clip! You can also try mixing and matching some sparkly bobby pins around and next to your barrettes for an edgy, playful style.
Wanting something classier, cleaner looking? Just use one barrette! Simple, classic, beauty. Try a pearly, chunky barrette to pin back the front of your hair, especially in a bob styled haircut this is so chic.
Slicked back top:
Try an oil based product such as Fatboy Tacky Oil to execute this hairstyle. Whether you have curly hair or blow dry your hair smooth, put two – three pumps of the Tacky Oil in your hand, rub your hands together until you get a slightly tacky texture with the product and work through with your fingers from roots to ends, being sure to apply at the top of your hair just as generous as the ends. Position your hair all back and away from your face, you can secure with some clips/pins as you blow dry or air dry. Once your hair dries in position, remove pins, then you’ll want to use a strong hold hairspray. I like Fatboy Moldable Lacquer Strong Hairspray for this. It adds a nice amount of shine and hold. Then you may want to reapply some bobby pins but more hidden (or use some funky pins that you don’t mind showing) to hold your hair back in place.
Hair accessories this season are all about making an impact, the bigger the piece the better it seems! This is such an easy, fun way to keep your hair out of your face, especially when styling your second day hair. Positioning the band right at your front hairline and slightly over the tops of your eyes give you a right off the runway, athletic cool girl look. This trend is really sweet for falls cooler, brisk weathered days. A headband would work great on your second day slicked back top hairstyle since your hair is already in the right position for the placement of the band! Or try it with some of your hair in front still out and forward for a very casual, lazy fall day kind of vibe.
Low side pony-tail and ballerina bun:
Back to my blog about the low styles. These are so simple to achieve, and create such a stylish, effortless look easily. You’ll even see Kim Kardashian rocking a low pony in a glamorous look! Tie your pony to the side just above your shoulders for a soft, sophisticated fall style! Pull off the same type of look with a low ballerina bun for a strong, boss lady look, pair it with some statement earrings and you’ve got yourself a polished look in no time at all.
As seen on celebrities such as Margot Robbie, a few small loose braids channel back to the hippie 60’s and grungy 90’s styles and are a super easy DIY hair do. Just separate a couple of small sections in the front of your hair. Loosely braid and secure with a clear elastic. Voila!
Partly pinned back:
A center part has made such a strong comeback on and off in the past years. For those who have struggled with not liking the look here’s a fun way to put a fresh spin on it. Get your center part in place and ready, then brush and pin back the front on both sides behind your ears. You can use a couple of bobby pins behind your ears in an “X” formation to hold. Then feel free to have fun with any statement pins or pretty barrettes to accessorize if you’re feeling fancy!
These fall hairstyles have me even more excited for fall then any pumpkin spice latte could make me! I’ll be trying them all, let me know if you have questions or want to try one out with your next appointment at MMC Style!
Your blonde hair has options with color and style
Contrary to what most people think, the biggest thing that differentiates one blonde from the next is not always the amount of highlights put into the hair, but the amount of blank space left in between, lowlights added in, toners, and shadow roots. Blondes have become a lot more fun for me to do after understanding and using more of these techniques.
Hair Color – Lowlights
Lowlights are typically a color that will be foiled or painted in to add some depth into hair. A color picked for lowlights depends on the overall desired end result. Some people will pick a color that is just slightly darker than the all over color they have going on, some like it drastically darker, or even more fun, we can add in some pops of blue, or green, or whatever fun color a guest may fancy! Strategically placed lowlights can be very soft and subtle, or more dramatic for a noticeable amount of contrast.
Hair Color – Toners
If you’re someone who gets highlights, or bleaches your hair, you have probably heard your stylist mention they need to tone your hair, sometimes this can be done at the shampoo bowl in damp hair, some stylists will bring you back to their chair and dry you really well with a towel, or even blow dry before applying. Tone refers to the color you want to see in your hair, and how much depth you want that color to have. You may want a “cool” blonde, which refers to something with a violet, blue, or even silvery tone to it, but just a touch of that “tone” so it isn’t visibly blue per say to the eye. So essentially what we’re doing with toners is neutralizing, which would be correcting unwanted tones in the hair color, or using a toner to add a desired certain amount of color to the hair.
Hair Color – Why Toners?
When we use lightener on hair it doesn’t lift right to a natural looking, pretty color right away. It leaves the hair with raw tones that look yellowy to orange, and lack shine. Using a color to tone those raw highlights either right after a lightening service, or in between lightening service appointments to correct any off colors caused by hard mineral deposits in our water, or from heat styling too much, gives you a prettier, desired color. It has shine, the proper color, and overall looks so much healthier and dare I say natural looking as well, even those fun rose gold tones, or silvery/violety tones people are wearing a bit bolder lately!
A toner will not brighten your hair, so if your hair needs to be lighter your stylist will first have to apply a lightener in some kind of form if your hair is not light enough to pull of the tone you are looking to do. This may have to be done in more than one step, or even appointment if you’re looking for a nice bright, icy platinum blonde end result. If there is too much depth left in the hair you can only tone to that same level of lightness or darker. So you may be OK with being more of a medium blonde, and in that case a toner usually to neutralize some orangey-yellow is necessary.
Hair Color – Shadow Root
A shadow root is another way to add depth to any hair color for many different reasons. I like a very soft shadow root on my blondes to blend the line of highlights at the top, whether they be highlights right up to the scalp, or highlights that my guest likes a bit more “worn in.” So as you can imagine some shadow roots will be very minimal, so these I don’t like to have much darker than my final color. Some shadow roots can be more extended or dramatic, for this I may pick a color that is a couple of shades darker than our end color for a noticeable result.
A lot of pictures of bright blondes that have been circulating Pinterest and Instagram lately believe it or not feature a shadow root. That bit of subtle darkness really helps the platinum blonde pop and look dimensional.
You can schedule a consultation, or chat with your hair stylist before your next highlight or color appointment to see how any of these methods can be used to elevate your overall hair color! Or you can book online right here with Mallory Cook – MMC Sytle.
What should you expect when walking into a Salon?
In the salon industry, even in small metro areas there is a salon, salon and spa, salon suites, etc on every corner. Because of this, clients have come to expect much more of the “VIP” or “ME DAY” salon experience over just receiving the service alone. From the initial greeting to their close out, there’s many steps we need to cover along the way to make sure our guests want to come back. I believe anyone working in a salon or for themselves in a salon suite should take note. You’re never too cool to greet your clients with an amazing attitude and service.
Start with the right salon greeting.
Starting with a pleasant “hello, welcome, or a GENUINE how are you?” Goes a long ways, and is something that is so surprising people are missing the mark on. Then taking the moment to find out who they are, are they checking in for a service, are they trying to buy product or looking for info. Then still making them feel welcome, giving them a tour, while along the way showing how you can service them in many ways better than the next salon down the street. Offer them a drink, have plenty of options for everyone, even dare I say an adult beverage such as a glass of wine or a beer from a local craft brewery (obviously only offer this to those you know are of age).
In short, make them feel important! Acknowledgement includes: handshakes, hugs, salutes, funny cheek side to side kissy thing…it’s all what makes you and your client comfortable immediately. No matter what they’ve walked in the door for.
TRAINING is Necessary!
Whatever your processes you have in order for how your guests are talked to and sold to on the phone, how their handled in person, to the order of things taken care of when you’re checking a client out, EVERYONE needs to be on the same page in your salon. This isn’t taking away their ability to be personable, it’s making sure one guest isn’t getting offered up more of a greeting, making sure you don’t have a staff member just offering every single person discounts in order to be able to sell, etc.
Everyone should have the same knowledge, integrity, and respect for your business and your customers. This makes for an experience that your guests come to expect, and you want to make sure every single visit you and your staff are knocking those expectations out of the park, not just getting lazy because “oh this client has already been here a few times, we can drop the ball.”
Think about the day your client may be wishing for.
Our clients schedules are packed with responsibilities and activities for others almost every day of the week. Without them scheduling time for themselves they may continuously wait for a time when things are less hectic or when they have achieved all of their goals. But such a time may never come, so help them plan a me-day ahead of time and put it in your schedules together. Make your clients day special, make it an easy decision to schedule their follow up appointment, try a new hair product or even put in a drink suggestion for next time (and write this down in your notes). Simply put, make an effort, this appointment is for them and not for us.
Keep me on my toes.
Please share with me other experiences you, as either a provider, or a guest in a salon or spa, have either wanted improved, or totally loved. You can share any questions you have about why things have been done a certain way during any part of a service you’ve received in a salon or spa. I’d love to keep posts like this coming, it not only helps me stay on my game, it helps my industry as a whole, hold ourselves to higher standards and be able to prove our worth to our clients.
One of my most consistent, favorite go to hair product lines for hair care has been Pureology. I love that the whole Pureology line focuses on colour care and hair protection. Specifically, Pureology Smooth Perfection has been the answer to my client’s and I’s issue with hair fuzziness! Not only does it make styling hair easier, it keeps your hair style intact through humidity, wind, heat, and the dryness of winter in Wisconsin.
Pureology Smooth Perfection Shampoo & Conditioner:
For frizz prone hair, this duo of shampoo and conditioner not only smells great, it also gets a great silky, lather in the shampoo, and the conditioner is nice and thick but easy to spread throughout your ends. They deliver camellia oil and Pureologys exclusive Thermal Antifade Complex®. These ingredients help to make ease of blow dry hair styles, fight frizz, and improve manageability for a perfect blowout.
Leave in Hair Styler Treatments:
- Smooth Perfection Style & Care Infusion: A two formula product, which one looks cool in the bottle, and two really makes you feel like you’re getting your bang for your buck with a two in one product. This features a smoothing styler along with a leave-in-conditioner. It leaves your air smooth while still moving like natural, soft hair. It’s amazing, and great for someone who likes to just do a quick blow dry hair style and be out the door!
- Lightweight Smooth Lotion: This is one of my favs, it has heat protection, is truly lightweight so even my fine haired guests love it, and it has lasting frizz and flyaway control. This lotion has coconut oil as well to help with smoothness in your hairstyle. This one you’ll want to apply to wet hair and blow dry in, as a hot tip you can use a small amount on dry hair to re-smooth any stubborn frizz for the ultimate frizz control.
- Smoothing Serum: I love this for my curly or wavy girls for so many reasons. This serum just like the lotion has heat protection, so it’s got you covered no matter how you want to wear your hair. It works great to apply in and let air dry while keeping the hair looking so controlled, but nice a natural at the same time. Or you can blow dry this in for a nice, sleek blowout that will hold through the weather outside while your hair feels great all at the same time. This one too can be applied to dry hair as well for added sleekness after styling or drying.
The Pureology Smooth Perfection line is really a good one for anybody who struggles with frizzy, flyaway-ish hair! It makes styling so much easier, and with multiple options for leave in products, just about anyone can pick one of these for their desired hair style results.
Here’s a quick video of my hair using Smooth Perfection Lightweight Smoothing Lotion. I applied the lotion to my wet hair before blow drying, blow dried quickly and then flat ironed. After finishing all of that I applied about a pea size of the lotion to my ends and worked up a little bit to the roots. You can see in this video my hair is flexible and smooth, I love the way the Lightweight Smoothing Lotion feels and makes my dry, naturally curly hair look!
The Undercut: For Men by Mallory Cook – Hair Stylist
Men’s undercuts have been a trend for a long time, they’ve come from a style that was a very much so DIY (do it yourself) kind of style that was clip up the hair you wanted up top, shave everything down underneath, and slick back the top. Nowadays the undercut is extremely trendy, and can be applied in so many different ways, there’s an option for almost every guy, his look and his hair type.
Keep in mind as you’re reading through these different undercut hair styles, most can be worn in more than one way. Ask your stylist for styling tips as far as how to blow dry & what products to use to get the most out of your style!
If you like to wear your hair back:
The traditional application of the undercut of shaving down the sides and wearing the top long and back is still a thing, but there’s so many options. From fading the sides to a length of your desire, to wearing a beard with this, really any guy in any profession, and any style can wear this look. A pomade can be used to style the type in a sort of wet look for more of a hip kind of style, or a wax to create more of a natural finish will keep this look more natural and care free looking.
Your stylist will know based on the growth patterns of your hair, just how high you should go with your undercut, what length is going to work best based on how it grows out and how it lays. So look to them for suggestions if your trying an undercut for the first time
If your hair is curly/wavy:
An undercut for curly hair can be a really fun change, and for my guys with curly hair it’s a great way to condense your haircut to not feeling so wide on your head. Again with this style the length on the sides is up for interpretation of the overall style you’re going for. You can use a pomade to add some shine and definition to your waves.
If you like to wear your hair forward:
If you’re a guy who likes to wear your hair forward, or that’s just the way your hair grows so you don’t have much of a say in the matter, an undercut can still work great for you. You can wear it short and spikey, use a paste to create lots of definition in the hair style. Or wear a styling cream for a softer finish that’d go great in any type of office setting.
Lastly, if you’re a guy who pushes his hair to the side you can have a lot of fun with an undercut. From shaved in hard parts, to softer everyday looks, this hair style has many options. The longer the top compared to the sides the more of a unique look this will provide.
2018 – 2019 Men’s Trending Hairstyles
The past year men’s hairstyles followed a more natural, messy style, that has carried into 2019 as guys want the option of easier styling, while being able to be low maintenance as far as trips to the salon or barbershop. What’s important to remember for men is guys like change too, and they like to feel there is thought and effort going into how their hair is cut and styled when they’re in for their hair visit.
A lot of the styles now mostly work for all hair types, lengths and textures. So to my guys with thick, wavy or curly hair: rock that natural texture, the trends included in “short on the sides, long on top,” will all work great for you too.
A slight change to the haircut can make a big change to the overall feel
Guys, ask your stylist if your looking for something a little edgier than your classic crew cut for suggestions, fading the sides shorter, or leaving a little extra length on top. Another simple option is to work with your stylist on wearing it all over slightly longer, your stylist will let you know when you should come in for neck cleanups and reshaping (to keep your hair growing down, not out). Any of these options can freshen up your do, but keep it simple to style since you already have been pretty much styling this cut, just slightly different!
New Hair Style Product:
Another way to switch up your style if your not looking to do anything extreme with your cut is change up your styling routine. Try a pomade, such as Redken Brews Wax Pomade, it’ll give you a shiney finish without looking stiff, or Redken Brews Clay Pomade will give you a more rugged, matte finish with lots of texture.
Try Some Hair Color, it’s for Men too!
Guys can and do color their hair too. You can go darker to make a bold, sophisticated statement, cover gray, add in some silver highlights for a distinguished look, or add some sun-kissed highlights for a summery, brightened vibe. Chat with your stylist before booking a color appointment, he or she will guide you on how much time to allow for and the steps involved.

Mallory Cook Pulp Riot Hair Color Specialist in Madison, WI
Pulp Riot sure has done what they came to do on the hair scene, they’ve caused a huge, positive, disruption to our industry. They’ve taken what artists in the hair industry are doing and trying to create, and given them the best means to achieve these results and made it possible to push the envelope to a new extreme.
Pulp Riot was first introduced in 2016 with a new collection of 16 semi-permanent fashion colors, which more and more clients have been asking for, but I know for me I was reluctant knowing the tools for these results people were looking for were limited, and inconsistent. The launch of these 16 shades people were seeking out was the first game changer, and they had a whole lot of information and images available for artists to find to feel inspiration, confidence and support. Co-founders David and Alexis Thurston, owners of Butterfly Loft, along with fellow stylists, created Pulp Riot to connect stylist, to help form a community to achieve that level of support. “Pulp Riot is not just a product company. Our company is linking the beauty industry. We’re providing more opportunities to stylists and making them feel like they’re part of something,” says David Thurston.
They followed up by launching an 80-shade, permanent hair color line, called Faction8 on September 1, 2018.
FACTION8, WHY IT’S BETTER THAN THE REST:
It’s been decades since any other top color companies have come to the scene. Pulp Riot has been created on what we are doing RIGHT NOW in salons as far as any trends and techniques go. We now use complicated techniques of blending, color melting, balayage, foilage, painting, etc, we need new products and tools that help us apply these new techniques to meet our guests beautiful expectations. Pulp Riot has beat any other color lines to the punch of being created for these new types of applications. The consistency, which is creamier, is so much easier for stylists to apply and blend softly into the hair, making these new looks all achievable, empowering stylists to feel truly like an artist.
Pulp Riot was created in hair salons, by stylists, for stylist. It makes sense to have someone in the same profession, especially working in a city that is on top of the latest and greatest trends, creating the products in which we are using today.
Not only did they hit the nail on the head with consistency, they really considered the ingredients going inside their product. Those ingredients we want, and those we do not. They contain quinoa, a gluten free seed with the power to deliver protein and moisture to hair. These are the top ingredients hair is made of, these are broken down and lost during any bleaching/coloring processes, and just every day from styling, being outside in the sun and wind, etc. Therefore, Pulp Riot color line not only has the power to achieve modern day color trends, but it also keeps hair to its healthiest potential, full of protein and moisture.
They’ve also considered one HUGE fact of life for many stylists, space for total stock of a color line. Not only does the Faction8 line have 80 shades, simple, but can achieve so much, but it can also be altered from a permanent line, to demi-permanent line with the adjustment of developer mixing ratio! Hallelujah!!! We can officially use that space where we’d have to keep two FULL color lines from the same company, to make sure we are well stocked in the full array of colors we’re using daily, being able to have confidence that we can achieve any color a client comes in asking for on any particular day.
WHAT FACTION8 MEANS:
David Thurston: “A faction is a smaller group of people who are dissenting against the larger group of people,” and this is what Pulp Riot has been striving for from their start in the industry. I love jumping on board with a company that started as a small group who wanted to find new and innovative ways of going about things, to achieve better results. The “8” on its side becomes an infinity sign, the idea came up when they were considering a permanent color line, I take this as a sign they are here to stay. Fun fact about Faction8 packaging, the art work was all done and designed by a tattoo artist, Chris Paez who owns a shop called De La Rosa Tattoo, resulting in tying things permanently together, making the line very much so about the art of our industry.
WHY 80 SHADES?
The 80 shades beautifully covers the needs necessary to formulate any type of color, from blondes, to rich black, from vibrant reds, goldens, ashy, to every single possibility in between. The 80 colors available cover the right amount necessary for a starting point, and leave plenty of room to grow. Again the benefit to being created by stylists, they could think hard about what was really necessary, and have made it so realistic for any artist to have all of the tools necessary to create an unlimited amount of shades and colors.
WHAT ARE THE SPECIAL TECHNIQUES CREATED WITH FACTION8?
Because of the consistency and blendability of Faction8, there is a whole slew of techniques that can be applied and any artist can feel confident in their end results being smooth and flawless. Shadow rooting, color melting, balayage, ombre, lowlights are all made easily possible by Faction8. It covers gray perfectly, and for those clients who come in as frequent as every 2 weeks with a tiny outgrowth, it is possible to tap it on to that tiniest bit of out growth and not worry about overlapping previous color. Thus solving the problem of color banding we see happen in our gray clients all to frequently.
I also haven’t had reds ever come out so fully saturated, they turn out vibrant and so bold. The depth of ashy colors is unmatched too, I really enjoy that the Faction8 natural colors are cool based, so many clients always have to specify they pull warm and extra ash is usually needed, compromising the consistency of gray coverage. With Faction8 I see those nice neutral results and full, solid gray coverage, leaving the hair shinier and more beautiful than I have seen in previous color lines.
Because permanent color is oxidative, and semi-permanent are not, be sure to use Faction8 permanent colors and Pulp Riot semi permanent colors in two seperate processes while using them together in a service. If they touch there will be some unpredictable friction! Use your permanent color along with any lightening first, shampoo out, and then apply the semi-permanent color over top for the best results every time!
HOW PULP RIOT IS USING SOCIAL MEDIA TO CREATE A COMMUNITY:
Pulp Riot has done an amazing job focusing on getting out education digitally. They started out from the get go publishing information on their line, from facts to tutorials, there’s so many answers a stylist could need to switch confidently to their full product line.
They also have a private Facebook group that any stylist can sign up for, and an impressive Instagram that immediately connects to you multiple stylists offering up free info and suggestions daily! With countless pictures, videos, formulas, hot tips, a stylist will never run out of inspiration following these guys on social media. They do everything in-house, so response time is unexpectedly quick, creating that supportive community feel I’ve mentioned a few times.
NEW TO PULP RIOT:
This whole year, Pulp Riot has a full schedule of products launching, which so far has proved to be extremely exciting, and necessary. I’m a firm believer in a full system of hair care products & stylers. If I’m using Pulp Riot hair color on my guests and loving it, and they’re loving it, you can bet any shampoo, conditioner, any stylers, etc are going to go along beautifully with that, helping me help my clients achieve their best hair every single day.

The Grown Out Pixie Cut Style by Mallory Cook
This version of a pixie cut is an attainable style for anyone who has always toyed with the idea of a pixie haircut, but still wants some length to help it fit their face shape. This pixie haircut is short on the sides and has different styles of a long, choppy textured top.
Different layering and texturizing techniques on the top make this pixie versatile so it may be styled for any face shape. For a rounder face shape we want to create length, so more volume on top is desired. Wearing the front down into a messy fringe style, helps break up a long face shape.
Recommended Pixie Cut Hair Styling Products
In order to pull off a pixie cut, it typically should be styled every day, even for a messy look. Turn to your products for help, Pureology Style & Protect On The Rise Root Mousse is a great one to add to wet hair and air or blow dry. While your dealing with second day hair, try Redken Powder Grip 03 Hair Powder to re-lift the root area & absorb excess natural oils, then spray in some Pulp Riot Zurich, Light-hold hairspray, to rework your style and hold it in place.
Add Color to Grown Out Pixie Cut Style
For Pixie Cut color, the look of the bleached out pixie cut is not going anywhere out of style. Ask your stylist what tone of blonde is right for your skin tone, from ashy-silvery blonde, rose gold, or bright vibrant blonde with a slight golden hue, these tones can work this what could be harsh style work on anyone. Use an at home care plan recommended by your stylist, Pulp Riot Barcelona Toning Shampoo, purple shampoo, is one that can help keep unwanted yellow tones in your blonde at bay. It’s also very cool when a bleach blonde pixie cut is grown out after about a month, rock the rooted look until the roots are too long, this is very cool and adds tons of depth and dimension to your short crop.
