Hairstyles to Stand out at your 2019-2020 Holiday Parties
Holiday Hairstyle Ideas by Mallory Cook of #MMCSTYLE
Winter can be the cheeriest time of the year with magical winter weddings, festive holiday parties, glitzy New Years Eve parties, and everything fun and exciting in between! It’s time to switch up how we wear our hair, it’s the gloomiest time of the year, time to freshen up our looks to brighten up our dark, cold evenings! Here’s some fun show-stopping styles to complete your memorable look during this festive time of year!
Holiday Hairstyle – Slicked Back Pixie:
More proof for those on the fence of trying a pixie that you DO have so many options! Blow dry in a root boosting mousse such as Pureology Style & Protect On The Rise Root Mousse, you can use a Denman brush with your dryer to create lots of lift at the root, and direct the hair in a backwards motion. Finish the style with a polishing product such as Techni.Art Fix Polish from L’Oreal Professionnel, and a quick mist of Pureology Style & Protect Soft Finish Hairspray. Voila! You’ve transformed your pixie to a sweet, polished, party ready do!
Holiday Hairstyle – Deep Side Part With Waves:
A way to switch up whatever kind of wave you prefer, set with a deep waver, soft waves created by a flat iron, or a classic beachy wave do! Move that part over to update your style, you’ll have people asking what you did different, simple right?! Start by blow drying your hair into your deep part, blow drying it into place with a flat paddle brush, using an ‘X’ motion against your scalp will help set your hair in that part by knocking out cowlicks. Try using a blow-dry spray such as Pulp Riot Istanbul Blow Dry Spray to help hold your hair into your newly formed part. After being sure your hair is all the way dry, add in your waves as you normally would, I suggest on the top of your head on the side with the most hair starting your wave pattern just below your parietal ridge (widest part of the head). This will keep you from having an awkward amount of volume on the fullest hair side of your head.
Holiday Hairstyle – Pearl headbands and accessories.
A simple way to class-up any style, even a simple smooth blowout, is to add some pearls. Polish your hair while softly defining your style with some Fatboy Tacky Oil Protective Styler to dried hair. Then slide over a headband bedazzled with pearls, or pop in a pin or two to hold a section back in the front. Polished hair versus more on purpose textured hair fits the look for pearls.
Holiday Hairstyle – Half-up high pony tail AND full on high pony tail
This is such a fun party look, especially great for curly hair, or fantastic for second day curled hair. You can wear that hair on top nice and high to create all the volume and bounce! I love adding in L’Oreal Professional Techni Art Next Day Hair Dry Finishing Spray to really poof out the top of a half up style, and lift out the ends of the down hair for a full style.
Make a statement by brushing it all up, sleek against your head and tying everything up.
Holiday Hairstyle – Low braids & pony’s
This is such an easy style, anyone can do on themselves if they know how to put in a pony tail holder, and even more if you can braid! Whether you go for a textured, soft pony, or a sleek pony tailed braid, this is a sure way to have an updated, fun look for your party. It’s also great to have all of your hair out of your face, keeping it out of your food, beverages, and pulled back for dancing! Try adding in some bling, you can braid in some metallic strings, or pin in a string of pearls or gems. Bored of a regular classic braid? Try a fishtail braid, or infinity braid. I recommend Braid Aid from Redken, rub some in your hands and work it through the lengths of your hair. I also like a bit of Braid Aid in my fingers as I am completing a braid, it helps me hold hair, especially hair that is very silky and fine.

Retaining your salon clients through the years
A life of a career hairstylist can be a rewarding, and beautiful one! The one thing that makes this possible, and is not a painful feat, is retaining clients through the years. This allows a stylist to be consistently busy, while building meaningful relationships, and receive plenty of referrals from their clients who know them. Top notch customer service, listening, booking ahead or having an easy solution for guests to book, self image, and staying up to date on skills and trends are all things that keep a client wanting to come back.
Customer service should be any salon’s first priority
It’s obvious as a hairstylist customer service skills should not be lacking, we are in the industry of guest handling, and it is something we should all take seriously! From the second that customer walks through the door they are a guest in your salon, and should be treated like VIP every time. Make sure they are comfortable along the way, having a beverage, a comfortable seat, something to read, and having a swift easy checkout are all things that add to a great service. Make them feel beautiful and important (they are paying for our TIME, we need to give that whole-heartily to them). Not rushing a service, and being present for your guest the whole time they are in your chair are crucial. Your cell phone should not be in sight where it will distract you, and the conversation should be kept between you and your guest, unless of course your guest strikes up a conversation with someone nearby. Overall, guests feeling fully attended to from the second they walk in the door makes them feel very special, and like they are cared for, this will keep them coming back for more!
Clients aren’t coming to listen to a hairstylist talk the entire time
The skill of listening can be a tough one, practice listening until your guest is completely done with a thought before beginning to think of a response, especially during your consultation before starting a service. Trying to answer before someone is finished with a thought can make a conversation not only take longer than necessary, but can also lead to missing some very important information your guest may be saying. Make sure to ask questions when you are reading someones body language that is not representing what they are saying. This really shows your guest you are paying attention and can make them very comfortable with you. Once a guest is comfortable talking with you, knowing you are hearing what they like and want, so you can execute exactly what they’d like. Do this and they’re going to be coming back to you for certain!
Scheduling their next appointment is completely appropriate
Make sure you are always setting as many clients up for their next service as possible. I believe a lot of stylists feel like they are being ‘pushy’ recommending a date, and setting it up for their guests next visit. I disagree, and I would go as far to say 95% of your guests disagree as well. This is a closing out part of the service our guests are looking for us guidance on. This is the moment we share with them when that new pixie may need a trim, or that fresh red color will possibly fade and be ready for a touch up; therefore, it’s an integral part of your service! In fact, I believe we are doing a disservice for not at the very least suggesting a time frame, before asking them to pre-book. And for those guests who prefer to wait to book, having an online system, or an easy way to contact us personally helps assure more than half of those people get scheduled properly with ease and at their own convenience, which leads them back into our chair! Don’t miss the mark by not supporting your clients, they come to your salon for you, not to have round about conversations about booking with your front desk staff, or end up booked for the wrong service, or even worse, with another stylist who was easier to book with.
Hairstylists are part of the decor and overall impression also
A nice reminder for our clients to why they come to us is having a great self image, this is especially important with first time clients, after all shouldn’t we focus on making the best first impression. We’re hairstylists, that equals having our hair done always, makeup on, and dressing to the 9’s to not only give us confidence, but it screams “you can trust me, I know what I’m doing, I care enough about myself so that I can take care of you!” Schedule days in the salon with staff to do service trades to keep color & cuts trendy and fresh, we are our own walking billboards, we should be taking care of each other! Being aware of how you’re carrying yourself in front of guests, and conversations being held is something I always work hard to remember. People are always watching when we’re out on the floor, it’s great to not be hiding in the break room so clients can see us, but we should be doing everything in our power to improve the image of ourselves and the salon while on the salon floor.
Evolve or die
Staying up to date on trends and skills in our industry for hair color, cuts, and styles will help keep ourselves and our clients on trend, and be another thing that makes our clients trust us in-order to keep coming back. Freshening up on skills will help us to be certain we are always using best practices in everything that we do, participating or hosting in salon classes is a fantastic way to stay fresh. Your salon team should learn from each other, grow together and help keep your fellow stylists accountable for their skills. Practice makes perfect, supporting stylists, and being supported by stylists will help us always give the best service to our client, and get them the exact hair style they are looking for. At the end of the day, I believe is one of the most important ways to keep our clients coming back, along with everything else you keep in your experience bag.
It’s about providing value without any “quid pro quo”
You may think this is about skill, it’s not, skill may be involved, but it’s truly about providing value to your clients new and old without asking for anything in return. Try placing your mindset into revolving around customer experience and services that we provide, it’s given me the opportunity over the last 12+ years to grow and maintain a steady business. I’ve been able to move from 4 salons during this time, each time moving up in position and responsibility, ultimately affording me the opportunity to go into business for myself. These values along with improving my skill gives me the confidence and excitement in-order to help grow and cultivate a high value culture for other stylists an build my own salon in 2020. Now, I will be able to grow a team, in an atmosphere where guests are happy, well cared for – in turn our team can enjoy themselves, be busy with new clients, and continually strive to bring value to our salon’s clients in every aspect of our services.

Pulp Riot Faction8 permanent hair color benefits
Faction8 Permanent Hair Color by Pulp Riot at #MMCSTYLE
Up until about a year ago I was always a Redken hair color girl, it’s what I trained on and knew very well, which always gave me confidence. In November of 2018, I switched the salon I was working with. I left for a new opportunity to help setup and start a brand new hair salon and spa on Madison’s west side. Setting up a salon meant I had the opportunity to look into an entirely new hair care and hair color product set, different from what I was using. However, I also had the choice to stick to what I was comfortable with. This question I thought, was going to be a no brainer…(duh, Redken was my thing). Then, my Salon Centric Sales Representative suggested I try the new Pulp Riot permanent hair color line, Faction8 and told me about all the benefits. My Rep could tell my interest was peaked immediately.
I had been using Pulp Riots semi-permanent color lines and loving them, so it made sense to give their permanent hair color line, Faction 8 a shot. So, I did some research. From everything I learned about Pulp Riot, I was sold from the start. The owners story, how they came to be, the education they offer, the fact that the line is created by artists. Everything important to me was well thought out in this line. The research on Faction8 had me wanting to know more and lead me to make the switch.
Some benefits of Faction8 hair color
Faction8 is a permanent hair color line created by Pulp Riot with 80 total shades, inter-mixable for complete color customization control, and the ability to turn from permanent to demi-permanent with the right mixing ratio with the developers. The Faction8 line is super easy to keep track of what I have on hand and I love the many ways to mix and create any color my clients or I dream up.
With Faction8 hair color, there’s boosters to really add some punch to your reds and coppers or help to ash out even more of some of your colors you choose. Another nice feature of Faction8 permanent hair color, you can use these boosters alone as a straight pigment for strategies such as making a high lift red or red/violet or straight up putting some purple or blue over pre-lightened hair for a dramatic fashion color. Using color theory you may also get more tone added to a formula when trying to keep excess warm or cool unwanted tones out of your hair canvas.
The Faction8 permanent hair color line has five high-lift blonde colors that work on medium-dark brown hair to lighter hair (I’ve also had success with these on very dark hair) to lighten and tone natural hair color all at the same time, which is flipping amazing! Faction8 high lift colors can also be used to tone blondes beautifully when mixed with a lower developer in the ratio of 1:2 or even more developer to further dilute the formula. Consider the background tone while using the Pulp Riot Toners, these can make beautiful pastel colors of every hue and add a dab of a booster to even make it more that color.
Every color in the the Faction8 permanent hair color line does consist of quinoa to strengthen and moisturize the hair while we are coloring. Another nice treat is it doesn’t stink, AT ALL. You may think it far-fetched, but I dare you to try to say it stinks, because you may be lying if you say it does! Even more pleasing to me is Pulp Riot’s semi-permanents, actually smell good.
Pulp Riot High Speed Toners are made to work in a matter of minutes on damp hair that you are blonding, guaranteeing quick results using a product in the way it was meant to work! You can mix these toners in with your lighter formulas to add a custom hue to your color, example: adding rose gold for a bit more of a pinky tone to a lighter copper is a super fun option! (keep in mind mixing rations with developers since you are adding a “high speed” color to your formula, you may want to dilute with a little extra developer if this will sit for a while).
The reviews are in, Pulp Riot’s Faction8 hair color is absolutely amazing!

Formal hair trends: Lower hairstyles, classic looks
Lower Classic Hairstyles – Mallory Cook at #MMCSTYLE
For the year of 2019, carrying into the fall/winter time I’ve noticed a ton of different kinds of formal styles, even translated into everyday hair styles being a lower hairstyle. Whether that be a low ponytail, bun, or easy twisted style, a low style seems to automatically imply a more soft, romantic, timeless kind of vibe to your look.
Low pony:
A low pony tail can be a quick, sleek style for the office, or a curled, softly pulled back look for a more formal occasion. A low pony tail is an amazing way to get out of an extra day of hair washing as well, yet still look put together. Use some dry shampoo, like Pulp Riots Berlin Dry Shampoo around your hairline to absorb any extra oils & give you a fresh, clean scent, and sometimes it is necessary to use a hair powder such as Redken Powder Grip 03 in the crown to keep your hair from sticking to your head and looking too flat.
Low bun:
A low bun can be a simple, cleanly done look for a day at the office for a professional look, or this can be appropriate for a formal occasion you are attending. A more intricate low bun with twists and sections pinned over each other can add a more formal look for a bride, or other black tie style occasion. Low buns are nice because they feel and are secure, no one will worry about any pieces popping out of place during an event. The low bun is the base for a lot of styles, because it is such a classic look. Feel free to add a braid to this style, whether their be a braid as more of a part around the hairline, or braid a piece to twist around the bun. There are endless options to this style. A great strong hair spray, I like Pulp Riot Toronto because of it’s ability to hold, but not look sticky, will help to keep your bun looking polished once styled!
Low twisted style:
These can be the most fun styles, and are so customizable. Add in a loose braid, pin organically, have fun with it! These types of hair styles are amazing to accessorize with hair jewelry or flowers randomly pinned in. They can be so elegant and timeless, or simple and casual. Leave out face framing pieces for an even softer, romantic, undone feel. You can achieve a more simple twisted style by pulling hair back loosely, letting some pieces fall our around your face, and randomly take pieces from the pony tail and pin up, or be as intricate as you want by taking smaller sections and twisting them, pull apart the twists and pin as you like how it is looking. I like to use a working hair spray while executing these styles, Pulp Riots new Zurich hair spray has become a favorite of mine for this.
Hairstyles To Wear For Any Occasion
These low styles are my favorite to wear, and to execute as a hair stylist. The wearer of them I always get the vibe of feels comfortable because they still do feel like themselves, sometimes people if they’re wearing something too different can make them feel off and uncomfortable. The purpose of any hair style is to improve on how one feels they look, so these help me to achieve the ultimate goal!

The good, bad & ugly of Semi-Permanent Colored Shampoos & Conditioners
Let’s discuss the pros and cons of semi-permanent colored shampoos and conditioners
Fashion colored hair is all the rage right now, and using an at home semi-permanent shampoo or conditioner packed with your pick of fun color pigment may seem like an easy way to achieve a new look; not all home methods may be the right choice for you. Please note, none of these at home semi-permanent color choices will give you the guaranteed results that a salon and professional hairstylist will. Buyers must beware, and after seeing some good and bad experiences, I thought it may be nice to inform people of some of things to expect from trying these types of products at home. I’ll try to cover some facts on these for the good, the bad, and the ugly to help you make a decision on when methods may be right, or not right for you.
The good:
First of all, I am not here to trash talk these at home solutions for a fun color change, or up keep. I think it’s incredible to have the options we all now have at home to upkeep some fun fashion color, I’ve used some of them myself when whatever I had going on with my hair color warranted use (right now I have three drastically different colors in my hair, so now is definitely NOT the time!). I’m not going to get to brand specific here, just really here to inform how semi-permanent colored shampoos and conditioners work.
I love how after giving a client a great, professionally done bleach retouch, or highlight that we then cover with a fun vivid purple, or color of their choice. Afterwards, they can purchase a product they can maintain that color they fall in love with until they’re over it. Rather than it slowing fading away right away on them. It’s also an easy way for a red head or copper-top to keep their color vibrant between visits.
Another perk of these products, with advisement of your hairstylist, you can shift the color you have in your hair when you’re wanting a change. When I say shift a color, I mean using the color wheel to take what color is on your hair now then add a different color to it to create a whole new color. For example: you may have faded blue hair and want to go more green, adding some greenish yellow to your hair may help you achieve a cool new green color. I’ve done this myself with faded rose gold hair before, I used a pastel blue which turned a pretty violet color with my more faded ends being a slate blue color. Super fun, all I had to do was shampoo my hair to do it!
The bad:
Depending on the color you’re using, semi-permanent colored shampoos and conditioners can make a MESS of your bathroom, shower, your hands, towels, etc!!!! Colored shampoos, and generally anything with color usually contains direct dyes, reds, blues, purples, etc. any porous/absorbent surface will suck the color right up (your hair included, so beware when choosing a color if you’re someone who doesn’t like color too bold). I find it best to wet down every surface in the shower before even opening the bottle, and then when applying to hair applying very carefully, with gloves if using a darker color, and not whipping your hair all over the place.
If possible, while you leave products set on your hair for a few minutes, clip your hair up with a clip you don’t mind getting stained, and rinse all the excess color off of yourself, or you could end up looking like a mono-toned blue, crazy person! Proceed with rinsing again carefully, and rinsing excessively well, I like to hold my hair out from myself the best I can so that color goes straight to the drain.
The ugly:
If you’re someone who is just wanting to try some purple hair for a week, or likes to change your color often, semi-permanent colored shampoos and conditioners aren’t always as desirable as you think. This is especially the case for my bleached blonde madams, your hair tends to be more absorbent and will hold onto that color a lot longer than you think. These products are more of a color stain, they actually stain the cuticle of your hair, rather than just depositing pigment, which is why they don’t fade as well, and will not come out with a color remover or bleach.
I’ve also seen these semi-permanent colored shampoos and conditioners, after use, fade pretty ugly. Sometimes you could end up with a blue color that you didn’t realize had a green undertone to it, so it fades green, and I’ve seen that green stick around and not be able to come out. If this is something that’s happened to you, you’ll want to talk to your stylist about “shifting” your color, so applying a color next to that color on that color wheel that may be more desirable to you next.
Another ugly fact, if you are someone who doesn’t take enough time to work the semi-permanent colored shampoos and conditioners evenly through your hair, and rather may just slap it on, you WILL be able to tell! It will be a splotchy mess, sometimes it is better to take these products in for your stylist to apply for you during a service, this will guarantee the best result. Now I will say not all stylists are willing to do this, if they have products or color they’d prefer to use, make sure you ask before you assume they will help you so you aren’t disappointed.
My personal experience:
I’ve personally used and had luck with a few brands of semi permanent shampoos and conditioners. First of all, Arctic Fox is freaking amazing. Easy to apply, VIBRANT and bold colors, and from what I’ve seen fade quite quickly over previously bleached hair for a lower commitment option. Same as Overtone, I love how overtone for each shade has a pastel version, a vibrant version, and extreme, for whatever amount of color you want. With Overtone you get the most results out of the “Coloring Conditioner,” the daily shampoo and conditioner from them I don’t feel is necessary. I’ve also really liked Watercolor Shampoo by Tressa Professional. Because it is a shampoo it is so easy to lather and apply, let sit for a few minutes, rinse, and repeat if you want it deeper. I love that the colors start at pastel so you can ease into a bolder look.
Would you, or have you tried a product like any of these to get some fashion hair? What’s worked for you or what tips can you share that made the process better for you? Also, if you like keeping up with me “Mallory Cook” visit “what’s trending” below.

Try Something New With Your Hair This Fall
Fall Hairstyles with Mallory Cook at #MMCSTYLE
Looking to try something new with your hair do to change with the season, but not looking to do any drastic haircut or hair color change? You’re in luck! This falls hottest hairstyle trends are easy to accomplish with a simple addition of a hair accessory, slightly different method of drying, or simple placement of some pony-tail holders.
Hair pins on barrettes, on hair pins:
Stacking two identical barrettes next to each other is a way to elevate your pony, down style, whatever it is you’ve decided to rock that day in a matter of two snaps of a clip! You can also try mixing and matching some sparkly bobby pins around and next to your barrettes for an edgy, playful style.
Wanting something classier, cleaner looking? Just use one barrette! Simple, classic, beauty. Try a pearly, chunky barrette to pin back the front of your hair, especially in a bob styled haircut this is so chic.
Slicked back top:
Try an oil based product such as Fatboy Tacky Oil to execute this hairstyle. Whether you have curly hair or blow dry your hair smooth, put two – three pumps of the Tacky Oil in your hand, rub your hands together until you get a slightly tacky texture with the product and work through with your fingers from roots to ends, being sure to apply at the top of your hair just as generous as the ends. Position your hair all back and away from your face, you can secure with some clips/pins as you blow dry or air dry. Once your hair dries in position, remove pins, then you’ll want to use a strong hold hairspray. I like Fatboy Moldable Lacquer Strong Hairspray for this. It adds a nice amount of shine and hold. Then you may want to reapply some bobby pins but more hidden (or use some funky pins that you don’t mind showing) to hold your hair back in place.
Chunky headbands:
Hair accessories this season are all about making an impact, the bigger the piece the better it seems! This is such an easy, fun way to keep your hair out of your face, especially when styling your second day hair. Positioning the band right at your front hairline and slightly over the tops of your eyes give you a right off the runway, athletic cool girl look. This trend is really sweet for falls cooler, brisk weathered days. A headband would work great on your second day slicked back top hairstyle since your hair is already in the right position for the placement of the band! Or try it with some of your hair in front still out and forward for a very casual, lazy fall day kind of vibe.
Low side pony-tail and ballerina bun:
Back to my blog about the low styles. These are so simple to achieve, and create such a stylish, effortless look easily. You’ll even see Kim Kardashian rocking a low pony in a glamorous look! Tie your pony to the side just above your shoulders for a soft, sophisticated fall style! Pull off the same type of look with a low ballerina bun for a strong, boss lady look, pair it with some statement earrings and you’ve got yourself a polished look in no time at all.
Loose braids:
As seen on celebrities such as Margot Robbie, a few small loose braids channel back to the hippie 60’s and grungy 90’s styles and are a super easy DIY hair do. Just separate a couple of small sections in the front of your hair. Loosely braid and secure with a clear elastic. Voila!
Partly pinned back:
A center part has made such a strong comeback on and off in the past years. For those who have struggled with not liking the look here’s a fun way to put a fresh spin on it. Get your center part in place and ready, then brush and pin back the front on both sides behind your ears. You can use a couple of bobby pins behind your ears in an “X” formation to hold. Then feel free to have fun with any statement pins or pretty barrettes to accessorize if you’re feeling fancy!
These fall hairstyles have me even more excited for fall then any pumpkin spice latte could make me! I’ll be trying them all, let me know if you have questions or want to try one out with your next appointment at MMC Style!

Brides: Salon & Spa Advice For the Big Day & Leading Up To It
Dear bride-to-be:
First of all congrats! Take a moment to remember how excited you were the day you were proposed to, smile, breathe deep! Focus on that positive, beyond ecstatic feelings you had in those moments whenever the planning process gets tough! While a wedding is a major milestone in ones life, so should the planning process and all events leading up to the big day. Think of it all as one, big happy celebration, from the moment you know it’s happening, to the moments your saying your “I-do’s,” toasting your guests, and having one last dance to end your wedding night.
I’m here to help, with some simple advice to help with planning your beauty needs for your wedding planning adventure. From appointments you may last minute realize you wanted, or even needed, but didn’t think to book, to who is paying the tab at the salon for your hair and makeup appointments for the day of. Here is some pointers that will help make things smoother, and help avoid surprises through the process.
Pre-wedding appointments:
There’s a lot of events surrounding a wedding, these all can end up feeling like a big ‘to-do’ if not properly planned for, you can end up feeling like a chicken with your head cut off and then even worse, realize you don’t have time or don’t have the skill to fix up your hair and makeup to the level you feel it should be. After-all, these events are for YOU, you are the star, and you deserve to feel beautiful, and not have to stress about taking care of these things your self if you are not confident in your ability! These are the events you may want to consider getting in for a blowout, maybe a quick makeup face, or even a classy yet simple curl style:
- Wedding showers: Now I understand some of these are more casual, and your usual day style is completely acceptable. Some showers brides family or friends will throw for them entail a rented out banquet hall, or restaurant, etc. These you may feel you want to feel a bit nicer for. Hitting up your local blow dry bar for a blowout style and some makeup is a great way to start your day feeling special and pampered. It really sets the tone to get excited to go to your party where friends/family/loved ones are going to pamper you with encouraging words, and shower you with thoughtful gifts.
- Bachelorette party: Depending on yours and your friends style, these can be an easy day trip, or out of town adventure. Planning something big like a night out of dinner and dancing in a big city and want to feel fabulous? Ask your crew if any are interested in a salon date to start the evening out right, you not only include your girls in getting ready, you ALL get to feel fabulous together with your last rendezvous before your date of become Mrs. Again, setting up an appointment with a blow dry bar is a great option here, or if you’re in your hometown ask your stylist if she and a couple other stylists would be interested in taking care of your wedding parties styles before heading out. I personally would love to be a part of this for a client of mine, helping getting the girls ready while they sip on some bubbly is always an exciting time.
- Nail appointments before the wedding: Thursday is a BIG day to get nails done before your wedding weekend. You will want to be sure at least three months in advance to have this scheduled for you and your party if this is an appointment you’d like to be sure you, and your girls standing next to you have done. I suggest the Thursday before to take pressure off of the day you already will be worrying about running around for rehearsal and rehearsal dinner, but do what is best for you and your schedule!
- Rehearsal dinner: Sometimes the stress of dealing with family and your wedding party right before the big day can really get to ones nerves. Scheduling an appointment with your stylist who will be doing your hair for your big day can be a great way to one, not only have your hair looking on point when your family and friends are the most stressful to you, but also guarantees success for setting you and your hair up for how it needs to be the next morning before doing the wedding style.
The trial run:
Unless you’re from out of town and have trouble scheduling this, I always recommend a couple months before the wedding setting up a consultation and wedding style trial run with the stylist who will be doing your hair. This appointment has many benefits to you and your stylist. Your stylist gets to know your hair and how it holds curl, reacts to products, looks when up, half up, or down. This gives you a chance to see how you like your hair in the style you picked out for your big day, maybe you will change your mind on how you thought you’d like it. After all, no ones hair is exactly alike, you may have your eye set on something that isn’t the best option for your hair type or look you want. Your stylist should also take the time to get to know the style and vibe you want to achieve with your look, the feel of your wedding style, and the style of your dress.
Your hair stylist should take pictures and notes that will help to make things seamless on the day of. If you have any changes you decide on between the trial and the day of, I highly recommend emailing your stylist so they are prepared. Make sure you don’t make any major haircut or color changes that could change how the style is executed after your trial run, unless recommended by the stylist doing your wedding hair.
If you are having makeup done for your wedding and have a particular way you like your makeup done, I highly recommend a trial run for this as well. You don’t want to be in the chair on your day of having to have them remove something and change it multiple times.
Spray tans:
Everyone likes a healthy glow and typically feels better with a tan year round. If you’re someone who gets spray tans regularly you have a pretty good grasp on how long in advance to get one for how you want it to look by a particular day. Example: I like my spray tan best starting at day 2, day 1 can be a bit severe for me, day two it has softened and I won’t be like “whoops I was too tan” while looking back at pictures. If you’re someone who is not used to spray tans, pick your salon you wish to go, and I recommend getting one before one of your events, shower or bachelorette party. This will help you learn what day you liked it best, and figure out how long it lasts so it is at it’s best on your wedding day. You may decide all together to scrap it if you didn’t like how it looked. Better to find this out ahead of time!
Confirmations:
I like to recommend calling or emailing with the salon about a month before your wedding, and a week prior to make sure there have been no changes to stylists, and to be sure proper communications were made to have the right times, right number of appointments, and correct time to be done. This will not only be a relief to the salon that you are staying on top of things and they can rely on your party, but you know everyone’s appointments to be beautiful for your big day are secure.
The big day:
If in doubt or not specified, PLEASE, show up with CLEAN, and DRY hair and notify anyone else in your party to do the same!!! It used to be the thing to show up with dirty hair on your wedding day, it was known having clean hair made a style not stick as well, or so we used to say. Nowadays everyone is accustom to not washing their hair daily, using dry shampoo. And I know me, I’ll go a week and a half without shampooing, that would not be great for someone trying to do a formal style on my hair. Stylists use hair spray and hair powders to “dirty up” clients hair if I need to add some texture, grit and hold before starting my style. Coming with clean hair gives us the chance to prep the hair properly for the look we want to achieve.
For makeup, I am not a makeup artist, but I can tell you showing up with a clean face, moisturized lightly will create a great base for your makeup artist. Talk to your esthetician/makeup artist before hand on any other specific instructions they may have.
If you or any of your party has extensions in your hair be sure to let the salon, or your traveling stylists know so they expect to take a little more time with that person. I always like to get a list of how many people are in the party getting their hair done, this includes mothers and flower girls, and get a feel for what they want done in advance. If someone is wanting a specific kind of up do that is a little more specialized it is also good to know. For a salon they will take care to place each person in the party with the stylist who is best suited for the style they’d like created. Please be sure to have a time frame of when you need to be done and make sure to notify your stylist your working with or the salon so they can be sure to accommodate appropriately. If anything changes with that time make sure to let them know right away, but be mindful before changing your schedule for the day of, the salon or stylist has other clients and may need be able to accommodate major timing changes, it is best to get the schedule locked in before booking the appointments.
All of these prep steps followed allow for you and your whole party to really relax, and have fun with the getting ready process. Depending on the time of day getting ready, you can plan to have breakfast (scones, bagels, fruit, coffee, juices) ready and out for your party to grab as they are getting ready, or have a sandwich tray ordered and delegate who and what time is to pick that up and deliver to the salon or wherever you are getting ready. It’s also a usual thing for the bridal party to have wine, champagne, or mimosa fixings to sip on and enjoy while getting ready. Be sure to have one or more people tasked to take some pictures of the group while they’re getting ready as well! Documenting the whole process you will appreciate later because the whole day is so exciting, parts of it can be a blur.
Paying:
Most salons or stylists will take some kind of deposit and have it due within reasonable time before the wedding day. Confirm when paying your deposits the amount of time scheduled, and the people scheduled to be sure everything is in place. You’ll want to be sure you’ve discussed pricing before your appointments so there are no surprises. Make sure to talk with your whole bridal party about the prices if everyone is expected to pay for their own hair. Some brides will take on the price of these appointments themselves if they are requiring all girls to get their hair and makeup done for their wedding. While some don’t require the appointments so then the bridesmaids will pick up the tabs for their own appointment when finished. Talking about this plenty in advance avoids any annoyed, or frustrated feelings on the morning of!
I hope this information helps you feel set up and prepared for your big day! My biggest piece of advice on top of any of this is if you have questions just ASK! Ask trusted friends and family members who have been married, and ask your service providers any questions you may have. You don’t know what no one tells you, people in the service industry are in the business of helping, so ask away and enjoy your process of planning one of the biggest days of your life!

You don’t offer online booking? Just look at the benefits!
Supreme Salon Convenience – Online Booking
Although the benefits of booking online are evident to my clients, many salons remain dedicated to a phone booking system (auto or non) that takes the customer more time, involves more staff members and can unfortunately lead a larger margin of error.
Our clients have evolved, shouldn’t our customer service? I chose function first, so I went to the starting line – bookings. I’ve found that the majority of my clients prefer to use the internet to do their salon appointment bookings versus calling direct and in both cases, I’m linking them into the same efficient system allowing them to reschedule up to the day before (my settings).
I wanted something that allows potential new clients to book a hair consultation for FREE, but also allow them along with my existing clients to book services they are looking for. Using inspiration from the name my parents gave me, I divided that into three categories: Misters, Madams and Color. With an additional Style category for products I sell online (we’ll get to that on a later post).
Salon Benefits of Online booking vs. Offline Booking
There are many benefits to booking online for salons or hairstylists taking bookings, benefits that make the life of both the customer and owner much simpler. Here are some of the most evident advantages of booking appointments online:
-
A Salon Online Booking System Offers The Utmost Convenience
As a salon owner or an individual stylist, you’d like your potential and existing clients to be happy and making the booking process convenient for them is a perfect start to achieving that goal. When clients can easily make their bookings online, you offer them the SUPREME convenience of booking.
Your salon clients can book a new haircut, style, color or whatever appointment they feel like it, time of day or night doesn’t matter. Anyone can use any device they prefer, as long as they can reach the internet. An added bonus for new clients is they have the option to think about their bookings or if unsure, schedule a hair / color consultation without any pressure.
These are excellent arguments that support an online booking system, top that off with service payments and product sales….well, that’s pretty convenient.
-
Booking Online Makes Your Salon Always Available
Your salon is now open and available anytime, anywhere. If you choose a salon booking application you will simplify the booking process incredibly while making your location available for booking new business or selling products online 24/7.
You don’t need an 800 number, auto-secretary, extra staff, or packed email boxes that you’re always checking. Plus, no hold times and instant gratification for your clients!
-
Booking Online: Lower Costs
When offering online booking, you reduce costs for your salon. Booking apps are very affordable now, so the don’t cost a fortune anymore. All you need is a website equipped with scheduling software. It is as simple as that. No need to rob the bank to accept reservations right away!
-
Booking Online: Increased Profits
By giving your clients the ability to book online, you make your salon available 24/7/365. This equals being able to receive more bookings then you may during your normal service times on the phone.
More bookings translate into more appointments. Besides, less people handling the reservations with reduces your overhead and possible errors. Ultimately this allows you the ability also hire less, but more experienced, better paid staff.
-
Salon Online Booking Systems Allow You to Measure Results Easier
Offline bookings can be difficult to track and, as a salon, you have no idea who your potential clients may be or how they heard of you. However, online bookings are transparent and allows you to communicate through channels your client provides like email, phone or text.
The online booking system provides you with accurate data as far as client’s appointments – past or future, which you can consequently use to design marketing strategies and loyalty programs tailored to them without being invasive or spammy. (most clients like using those little extras on their services or finding out you have a new product perfect for them)
-
Salon Online Booking With Social Media
Bookings on social media is easier then ever , which makes social media networks such as your salon’s profile on Google, Facebook, Instagram and more may become your new best friends to help fill some gaps in your calendar.
No matter how you feel about social media, the Masses love social media, and they are more than open to booking on a network that they are more familiar with. This makes social media very useful for sales, booking and communicating with your clients with instant messenger abilities.
The great benefit of integrating booking with your social media page or more importantly your google profile is that you make it easy for your new potential clients to direct family members and friends by searching for you online or their social platforms and instantly book.
-
Online Booking Equals A Completely Optimized Appointment Schedule
A salon booking system where clients book their appointments online allows you to sync your business, personal or any calendar with accuracy. An online booking system enables you to maintain an accurate calendar almost effortlessly across all your devices or categories.
Either you or your staff can quickly access the system to check when they may have appointments, the type of services they need to provide for each appointment, which clients they’ll be seeing, and what they should prepare for to give their client the service they deserve.
Booking online involves less scheduling-related errors, including over-booking, double-booking, or those mythical lost bookings nobody ever wants to take credit for. With online salon booking, appointments can be quickly updated, moved, or rescheduled by you, staff or the client with everyone getting the same notifications.
An online booking system offers an overall perspective of the appointment calendar for your salon to identify the gaps easily that may require particular attention and could be filled.
The availability and hours of staff can quickly be adjusted depending on the booking volume, you can even set filters or timers to make your reminders and notes top of mind.
-
Salon Booking Platforms Relieve Your Staff To Do What’s Important
How does a well working salon booking system affect you and your staff members handling customer service? Well, it is evident that updating your salon and website to accept online booking for your clients will now hugely reduce their phone time, playing phone tag with clients and give that pencil at your front desk a break.
On online salon booking system means that you and your salon staff no longer need to spend as many hours over the phone with clients – with most salon programs available now you can provide all the details of an appointment via reminder texts or emails. Also, no time is wasted managing schedules and/or playing phone tag.
-
Online Booking Eliminates the Bottleneck That Telephone Booking Creates
Put yourself in your client’s shoes and remember how it feels like to wait for your call to be transferred to the right person when you want to book an appointment over the phone or get a question answered. How many times have you given up on the appointment because of the long waiting time?
Your clients go through the same thing if you choose to stick to your traditional system. The bottleneck associated with conventional on the phone is eliminated when you equip your website you make the possibility of booking online available to your new or existing salon clients.
Also, remember that phone booking is only available to clients within a given time interval when clients are at work and usually have less time to call you.
Unless you can afford more staff members to handle several phone lines, basically only one caller at a time can get the help they need, the result is the rest of the clients potential or existing are left on hold. You salon will suffer and you probably have heard a few of your own stories involving a dropped call, didn’t book and or asking for a discount for wasting their time.
-
Online Booking: Increased Sales and Marketing Synergy
A big problem posed by the traditional over-the-phone booking system is having to refer clients to your website for more information because today most salons put all of the information a client may need to know. If you’re smart about it, why not include software that not only books your client, but can also ask more information if you choose to help market fun gifts for birthdays, electing to join your loyalty program or products just for them. (all updated in one place)
If clients can find everything they need on your website, why not use the site for booking online at a time that is most convenient for them, when they can make an appointment without feeling rushed or pressured or even redirected back to the website.
When you take a client from your website to the phone, you lose those spontaneous bookings because the client may get discouraged and frustrated while waiting on the phone to make an appointment or postponing the reservation for “tomorrow” during office hours.
Make the most of your website’s excellent copy and capitalize on impulse bookings by equipping your website with a salon online booking software.
-
Booking Online: It’s not the future, it’s now
You are living in the age of the internet, when people no longer use phone books to find a “salon near me.” They use the internet to find everything they need to know quickly online without any additional hassles. As of this moment more are not even bothering to type in a search and just asking their phone or chosen home device to contact the internet, search or go directly to your page. People like the convenience of doing everything online and now speaking to their favorite digital voiced companion.
It would be a huge loss for a salon to not capitalize on the technology offered today. Integrate a booking platform with your product pages on your website or social media pages is a big step, but maybe it should be your first! Your customers are online, so that’s where you need to reach them. Don’t miss out!
Disadvantages of Online Booking Systems
-
A Salon Online Booking System Comes at A Cost
Nothing comes for free in today’s age. It is a mistake to believe that a free booking system will come with all of the benefits of a paid one. Yes, an online booking platform will cost you but will not cost you a fortune and will undoubtedly be worth the small investment.
Most systems allow you to pay monthly or at a discount for annual. Depending on what salon software / online booking program you choose. You may also consider having a custom-made system that may cost more in the beginning and will also generate maintenance costs for support, spam, anti-virus protection and more.
As an existing salon, new salon or a hair stylist in a suite, you should already be used to the idea of cost, but, you should also be used to identifying a situation where the benefits compensate for the costs.
-
Any Online Booking System Depends on the Internet
Although it may not seem like a disadvantage, making an online booking depends on having internet access. It is a fact, and there’s no way going around the problem. BUT with internet access available on more and more devices, static or mobile, and with the internet being available in almost every corner of the world, it’s a problem that will soon become a benefit.
In Summary
Plenty of new salon client prospects that look to the internet to book their appointment. You have plenty of opportunities when looking into technology that no salon should miss out on. Including generating more time with additional revenue, saving time for your staff to perform at their best, and overall less overhead on your salon.

Men’s Hair Color: Functional & Creative
Men’s color, haircut and style by Mallory Cook of MMC Style in Madison, WI
A lot of men hear about their female friends or significant others going to spend a good chunk of time at the salon for color services, but it doesn’t even cross their mind that men’s hair color could be a type of service for them. They think women get to have all the fun and enjoy a couple hours of escape from life, while they themselves go in for the “usual” “number 2 on the side and longer on top” type deal. Well I have news for you guys, color services are for YOU as well, and you do have more than one option when it comes to color!
My male clientele, just like my female clientele, gets a scalp and neck massage at the shampoo bowl, any the same care that the appointment is about them, I’m not here just to rush through appointments and get people in and out monotonously. Not for guys, and not for women. Same for color appointments then, I will make sure to consult before we get started on what you’d like to achieve, and also give you any ideas of my own I may have for you if you’re looking for some advice. Here’s a couple of color methods I really enjoy for my male clients, and I think they really like too.
You’ll also get more than the quick 20-30 minute appointment with your stylist, call it your “forced relaxation” appointment if you so need. Guys need pampering and an escape from life too! And sitting an extra 45 minutes to an hour in your stylists chair can be a great way to get some stress relief from the everyday grind.
A dusting of lightness
Added in lightener (bleach) pieces by way of highlighting the hair in foils, or painting the product right on the hair is a really fun, simple way to update your look, looking like you just hit the beach. Or go bold and add in some platinum or silver light pieces for a very modern, cool vibe.
My male clientele, just like my female clientele, gets a scalp and neck massage at the shampoo bowl, any the same care that the appointment is about them, I’m not here just to rush through appointments and get people in and out monotonously. So the same is true for men as is for my female clientele, I will take the time to find what look you’ll feel good with and create a placement of the lightener that works with your style. This is also not like how you guys may remember from middle school or high school days of the guys rocking the yellow looking frosted tips. I know I as a stylist in 2019 have so much education at my finger tips and the availability of amazing products, I am sure to use a lightener that lightens your hair past that deep yellow phase, and then use a hair color as what’s called a toner to counteract any yellow tones left in the hair, and leave you with a nice, naturally sun kissed looking color, and at that point we could add in some cool silver, or even a daring slight shade of blue or anything else you may be feeling.
Blending Gray:
One of my favorite ways to blend grays for any client of mine is using a sheer coverage color. So a hair color that will cover some of your grays partially, and some more resistant pieces will remain gray (I also will leave out some grays if I want to make sure they’re not colored at all). Pulp Riot’s permanent color line Faction8 has the ability to be turned into a more sheer color, showing through what’s naturally beneath on your hair, but getting rid of just how much natural gray/silvers you have. A lot of my clients like this that are not ready to completely go gray yet, it’s an easy way to grow their hair out because there is not a harsh line of outgrowth when their hair starts growing after a color.
Covering Gray
This is pretty self explanatory, to my guys who don’t like your grey, whether you just don’t like how it looks against your skin, don’t want to feel it is aging you, or just plain old don’t like it, it is totally acceptable to cover it up. You can cover it with a color close to your natural, or even choose a new color a bit darker or slightly lighter than your natural for a new look. The nice thing about staying close to your natural is you don’t see the color growing out as severely, so you feel like you can make it through to your next haircut appointment before needing a touch-up.
Creative Coloring
While all of the previous methods are all creative coloring, especially if you’re in my chair. I love to come up with custom colors for all of my clients, I like it to have a tone or a hue you will not find on any of my other clients walking around!
But most people when speaking of creative coloring are talking wild colors, rainbow hair, or something very unique and eye-catching. For example a rooted section we bleach out and paint a rainbow on, some highlights we color violet, or a full head of rocker red hair. Is this loud creative coloring something you’ve ever considered, just been hesitant to pull the trigger? I’d love to hear from you and discuss how we can make this a reality for your hair, and fit it in your lifestyle!
Here’s an example of something you could come your hair one way to mostly hide, and then when you’re out and about could pop up and show off. Now you could keep this to one color if you choose, or even just a couple of your just! It’s all custom, learn to find pictures for inspiration, thinking about what you like and don’t like about any hair cuts and colors is what all tell all of my women, you, my guys, maybe haven’t heard this before. It sure will help give you some inspiration to maybe let yourself have some fun, and get to spend a little more you time in the salon!

Hair Accessories To Elevate Your Hairstyle
A couple simple ways you can add some “style” to your “hairstyle”
I don’t know about you, but I am obsessed with the overabundance of hair accessories/hair bling I’ve been seeing all over my Instagram and Pinterest feeds in all kinds of hair styles right now!
From every occasion, every hair style hair accessories across the board are being utilized to add style. Scrunchies, sparkly bobby pins, glittery words on pins, pearly clips, chains in pony tails, and headbands with every type of finish, I can’t freaking decide what to choose! That being said… I recently totally splurged on some mykitsch.com accessories, and I’m obsessed!
Fashionable fun:
There’s no such thing as overdone anymore. If you’re a Bravo reality TV fan like myself, you recently at least saw some snippets of Dorit, of Real House Wives Beverly Hills, with her insane amounts of glitzy clips covering her head that looked amazing with her overall sparkly, glam look! But for those of us who aren’t stepping over the fashion boundaries, a more subdued look is easier to wear, and can elevate a look for a night out of any kind! Check my selfies here, I was not ready to be about to go out in either of these, but having fun playing with these clips from mykitsch.com.
Hair Braids:
I’m loving the braids hair stylists have been showing off with string or some kind of chain intertwined. Cuffs and charms are another thing that I’m seeing and you can be so creative with these. Even digging out some old jewelry you don’t wear anymore is an option for this!
Head banded hairstyle:
Thanks to a variety of options, it’s easy to have “lazy day” hair, and make it look totally stylish. Headbands can be used around your head, tied around a pony, and you can even tuck your hair around the bottom to make it look like a sweet up-do done in a few minutes.
Everyday messy ponytail or bun hairstyle:
With a scrunchie, or some kind of fun glittery clips or pins to hold messy hair in place. It’s easy to throw your hair up now and have a passable hair style for the office, or any kind of professional, polished setting with these accessories. Try some dry shampoo, such as Pulp Riot Berlin Dry Shampoo, for some extra volume before pulling your hair back. Then finish with some Pulp Riot Los Angeles to add texture and gently pull hair at the base of your head from your pony tail holder to create a tousled up style. Finish with your favorite hairspray like Pulp Riot Zurich for a flexible, medium hold.
I know there’s a million ideas out there for fun, unique, and different hairstyle accessories. What’s your favorite accessory for your hair? I’d love to hear about it!
